BBC calls time on Top of the Pops
The BBC's flagship pop music programme Top of the Pops has been cancelled after 42 years, the BBC has announced.
"The time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion," said the BBC's director of television Jana Bennett.
The programme was first broadcast in 1964, from a converted church in Salford, Manchester.
It was moved to BBC Two last year after viewing figures on BBC One fell to three million. The final edition will be broadcast on 30 July.
Top of the Pops was only commissioned for six episodes when it began in 1964.
But it proved so popular that it won a weekly slot and has been broadcast by the BBC ever since, celebrating its 2000th show in 2002.
The very first show was presented by BBC Radio 1 DJ Jimmy Savile and the first artists to appear were the Rolling Stones, who sang I Wanna Be Your Man.
Many Radio 1 presenters hosted the show over the years, including Dave Lee Travis and Noel Edmonds.
The current presenter is Fearne Cotton.
--- I'm not surprised really. I watched it on Sunday and I didn't even know most of the people on there!

It's downfall certainly started when it was moved to Fridays at 7.30 directly against Corrie. What a stupid mistake. It couldn't compete at all.Reckon it wouldn't be axed now if it was stil in that slot.

I blame Andi Peters. I blame the Beeb, it was their fault in the first place. They moved it to Friday at 7.30pm in 1996 due to the Atlanta Olympic Games saying that it was temporary, aye, 7 years temporary. Let's hope the last show goes out with a bang. Do a montage of the title sequences, get a few old presenters in, etc.

Well it was about time they faced the limelight, I'd stopped watching it when they introduce the new layout of TOTP. It (and still is) horrid to look at, much prefer the old style.
So what now for the BBC musicwise?

Nothing. As Jimmy Saville said and summed it up perfectly, people used to watch totp as a ritual as it was the only chance to see your band/singer, now music is on 24/7 for most, so the kids just dont watch it any more.

Moving the time slot in line with Corrination Street, from the original 7:00 on BBC 1 when ITV would be showing it's traditional time filler such as "a survival special", has contributed. The BBC shot themselves in the foot ever since.
Also, slap-bang after the chart show during a tea-time was even worse.
Andi Peters is also to blame, ever since he took over the show was criticaly slated and ratings dropped.

Real shame imo, they changed the format of the show so it moved away from the kids market and changed its timeslot accordingly. Was still the only music show I watched on a regualr basis, tho it was only a matter of time before it was axed I think. Theres just too much competition nowadays with all the different music channels as Jimmy Saville said.
Tvark.co.uk has all the theme tunes, some class ones in there. The current one is just a rehash of the 1991-1994 one, something which a mate commented on as soon as they changed it in 2003!
The best theme tune is still "The Wizzard" by Paul Hardcastle, got that with several other theme tunes on a CD i made, still a class song which was actualy in the chart when it was used on the show!

Let's hope the last show goes out with a bang. Do a montage of the title sequences, get a few old presenters in, etc. The final show will be co-hosted by Sir Jimmy Savile. Other former presenters will also appear including Pat Sharp, Tony Blackburn & Mike Read.
