Did anyone else watch Jane Austen's Persuasion on ITV on Sunday night.
Not normally my cup of tea and I didn't see the previous two adaptations but there was nothing else worth watching and I'm glad we did. It was one of the best period dramas I have seen and what's wrong with a good love story now and again?
Sally Hawkins whom I can't remember seeing before and Rupert Penry-Jones whom I only vaguely know (not having watched Spooks) were superbly cast as Anne and Captain Wentworth - I could almost feel the emotions of betrayal and seemingly unrequited love between them.
The supporting cast were excellent too especially Anthony Head as Anne's father. As I wasn't around then I can't say whether it was true to the customs of the time but it certainly seemed authentic to me.
The settings were brilliant too. It is one of the few programmes I can't wait to see a repeat of.

glad there's a thread about it... i adore period dramas and i also thought this was one of the best ever, right up there with the beeb's pride and prejudice from ages ago. wonderfully done. the acting was superb and you could really feel the tension between them and their internal agony the whole way through. top stuff - will definitely get the DVD. i saw the two previous ones - northanger abbey was also very good, though the "gothic element" seemed a bit toned down, particularly during the second half. mansfield park was disappointing - billie piper was totally miscast, and even though i'd never read the novel i knew exactly what would happen almost from the off, although the fault there may be more jane austen's than the scriptwriters'. side note: other than rupert penry-jones, anyone who saw the bbc/hbo drama "rome" that was shown a couple of years ago (vastly underrated, imo) might have spotted brutus - better known as tobias menzies, who starred in persuasion as mr. elliott, anne's slimy cousin. random

My missus rated it.
Myself, I couldn't be bothered to sit through it all. She's made me watch the entire Pride & Prejudice and thats enough!

Me and Rachel watched it. I don't usually bother watching period dramas but actually quite enjoyed it.
