I thought Umbridge was excellently portrayed, and Snape and Luna as mentioned.
But, like Prisoner of Azkaban, the lack of real structure to the story meant that if you hadn't read the book, you wouldn't have had a clue what was going on in the film.
I think that it's no coincidence that the film was released just before the final book, perhaps as JK Rowling's way to remind us of a few important details, possibly the implications of the prophecy. I thought it was very unusual that the two-way mirror and the full extent of Snape's worst memory were both cut from the film, as I expect them to be critically important in the final book. Also, maybe all of the rooms in the Department of Mysteries are no longer very important in book 7

Will see it sometime this summer. Rachel's not bothered, says she'll wait to buy the DVD as she has them all. I'll go when they're away then. We have the book but I've not read it. Is that an advantage or disadvantage? Would the film make more sense if I read it first?

Yet I understood Prisoner... when I saw it and hadn't read the book. Well, aren't you great. There are certain critical things that they gloss over in OotP, and the connection between Harry and Voldemort is really unclear in the film IMO

I went to see it this evening and really enjoyed it. I think this one could be followed if you haven't read the book. They all miss out vast chunks of storylines form the books -but otherwise would have to be 6 hour films...
I went to see Goblet of Fire a few days after finishing reading the book, and that was the film that I felt would be hardest to follow without having read it first. Maybe I just saw it too soon after the book.

I haven't read any of the books. I have to say I was underwhelmed with this one. The new characters all seemed to be played well but ... I dunno... I've forgotten the plot already. It just never grabbed me

I've just been reminded - how fantastic was Kingsley Shacklebot. All through the start of the film, he was there in the background, and didn't say anything. Then all of a sudden in the scene in Dumbledore's office when the DA are rumbled he comes from nowhere to say "Dumbledore, he got style". I hope that he will be key in the final book out on Saturday

i thought it was fantastic! acting stepped up like 30 notches or so. Luna Lovegood was fantastic, Harry was much better, Umbridge was fantastic, but credit to Ron, for using the phrase "tosspot" x

Was a bit disappointed that they didn't make more of the ending and Sirius' death, but overall I thought it was very good!
