I'm back in London, I am back on course with the chart now, and the chart is swinging again with loads of new hits.
obi have had two NM #2 hits, nobody who enters has had a #1 except John Squire who had a couple with the Stone Roses, and Mike Peters of the Poppy Fields, who topped the chart late in 1989 as part of the Alarm. Damien Rice's last single also peaked at #2 and the Strokes peaked there back in 2001.
Emma surprisingly falls a place this week after making a fairly big climb last week - her big climb was helped by there being a lot of old singles falling. I don't think she will plunge down very quickly - she may manage to reclimb or at least hang around the #20 position for another week.
Next week sees more big names with releases (well big names on the NM chart anyway): Keane are following up a 5-week #1 and Belle & Sebastian are on a hat-trick. Two bands with very silly names, Death Cab For Cutie and Dogs Die In Hot Cars have both reached the NM top 3 before and have singles out. Alex Parks also reached #3 with her last single. (Busted's best NM placing is #14). There's also a little novelty song by Cinnamon called "Cakes And Pies".
Of the newcomers this week, no big ballads (sorry Ronan, you missed out), and not really any "pop" representation. There is a dance single which has entered fairly high - Dave Clarke - this sort of thing is unusual in the NM chart. In some ways a bit like what was making the chart around 5 years ago.
