After a week with lots of new entries came the releases of 16 February, one of those "extremely strong" weeks because there were so many good hits. With only 3 singles actually going down in the lower end of the chart, it meant that a few stragglers had to go to make space for them all, and so 8 singles fall out of the chart from their peak positions. Maupa did survive the cut so did not become a "50 for 1 week" act but Speedway are a 49 for 1 week act as their version of "Genie In A Bottle" didn't chart. But I'm sure they'll be back.
Keane emerged victorious from the last "big week", the releases of 13 October 2003, although that time they also were not the highest new entry - that was Cinerama and they leapt over them to reach #1, also keeping out REM and Damien Rice. But were eventually replaced by Belle & Sebastian, who are therefore after their 3rd consecutive #1, and are favourites now to make it.
Damien Rice himself is not doing so well with the follow-up, as it falls this week. His first single (that I know of) "Woman Like A Man" failed to chart at all. Alex Parks's "Cry" was #3 behind Belle & Sebastian and Obi, but unlike the other two who are doing well with the follow-ups, has not entered this week. It may well enter next week though as the releases of 23 February were not as strong.
A return for Dogs Die In Hot Cars - their previous hit "I Love You Cause I Have To" reached #3 last year. And Death Cab For Cutie who had two top 3 hits (and a flop) in 2002, and one of them also charted last year with The Postal Service. Cinnamon is a weird little novelty song, in a sense no better in quality than the Fast Food Rockers, but I like it.
