For the 3rd time in their career and the first time since 1993 Iron Maiden go to #1. During their early period they didn't do too well on the NM chart but had a much better run in 1988-93, which was also their most successful period in the UK chart. They had a UK #1 with "Bring Your Daughter .. To The Slaughter" which also reached NM #1 in January 1991 keeping out Seal's "Crazy", and in 1993 they hit NM #1 with "Fear Of The Dark" keeping out both the cover of "Cats In The Cradle" by Ugly Kid Joe and the re-issue of "Young At Heart" by the Bluebells, though that latter period was dominated in the UK chart by reggae. That they get there now is a more significant feat as the chart is a lot stronger. Their previous two #1s both came during very weak chart periods.
This week we see 13 new entries, but it's a bit sad to lose at least 11 of those that fell out - a pretty good collection of songs that fell out.
The Bees get the highest new entry - they also broke the UK top 40 this week, but their NM debut "Punchbag" charted nearly 3 years ago. Thus yet another "I charted them first" act.
Marillion re-enter this week for the first time since 1995. Their former lead singer Fish charted more recently in 1999. Between 1985 and 1987 when the two were together they managed 4 consecutive #1s, a feat only managed by 2 other artists. (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and the Clint Boon Experience who managed 5).
Agnetha Faltskog was in the chart before any of them - Abba were #1 in the first ever chart. Earth Wind & Fire failed to enter this week though, being among the bubblers.
A lot of songs with the F-word about - D12 and Eamon and Goldie Lookin' Chain in the chart and Pink among the bubblers.
