Bell vs Belle at the top, and it's Bell X1 who hold on for a second week. Belle & Sebastian are aiming to become only the 4th act in NM chart history to manage 4 consecutive #1s - the other 3 being Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Marillion and the Clint Boon Experience, the last of whom managed 5.
Not a great week for the football songs - 2 drop out and the other two take big tumbles and are certain to drop out next week. The re-issues have generally been ignored so Basement Jaxx were not even playlisted, "Good Luck" having been their only ever NM hit charting in January, and has been re-issued after being used for the theme of BBC Euro 2004 coverage.
Actually, there is a sort-of football related new entry. You might be asking where the Shane MacGowan song came from as it does not appear on the release lists, but in fact it is track 2 of the Jimmy Johnstone EP known as "Bhoys Of Paradise" in honour of Celtic FC's "Greatest Ever Player". I charted it because I like the song even though I dislike the club. The first track on the EP is by Simple Minds and Jimmy Johnstone and is entitled "Dirty Old Town" and was written by Ewan MacColl, Kirsty's dad.
The "quiet period", also known as the Three Weeks, where my music listening is extremely limited, might mean that two of last year's big NM hits could be considered for entry, "Cannonball" reached NM #2 and "I Love You Cause I Have To" NM #3 last year. If anything I think it's the latter that is more likely to be recharted.
