Paul McCartney gets to #1 as a soloist for the first time since 28 January 1984, a gap of 20 years and 8 months and 1 week. This is with a combination of a new song and a single that reached NM #2 11 months after his last NM #1. I say as a soloist because he reached #1 with the Beatles in 1996 on "Real Love". In fact Paul McCartney isn't a soloist on his latest single either - Tropic Island Hum has other singers on it who are uncredited, and We All Stand Together originally credited the Frog Chorus. "Pipes Of Peace" was a solo #1. His first NM #1 was a duet with Stevie Wonder on "Ebony And Ivory" in April 1982. He did continue to have regular top 5 hits since 1984 up until 1997 with "Beautiful Night" reaching #3 (actually in the first week of 1998). His single and McFly at #5 break up what is otherwise a very much indie top 12. At 61 I think he is also the oldest person ever to have an NM #1. The biggest gap between #1s for all credits (i.e. whether solo or as part of a group) is held by Don Henley who reached #1 in 1998 with a re-issue of "Boys Of Summer" and had also been #1 in 1977 as part of the Eagles on "Hotel California", the gap there being 21 years and 2 months. The previous biggest gap otherwise was Elvis Costello (20 years 4 months).
Donny Osmond makes his NM chart debut - his 70s singles were pre-chart era but I don't know how many of them I'd have charted anyway. He did have one single "Soldier Of Love" in 1988 which might have charted but didn't, and also the Osmonds' reissue of "Crazy Horses" in 1999 came close but didn't quite get in.
I think Bill Wyman's name was last credited in the chart in 1981 with "Si Si Je Suis Un Rock Star". I think that charted and "A New Fashion" didn't but I'll have to look it up. He has been in the chart more recently as part of the Rolling Stones. Bill Wyman actually vocalised on his 1981-82 singles but doesn't vocalise in his new band.
