Paul McCartney remains on top. "Pipes Of Peace" managed just 1 week on top and "Ebony & Ivory" just 2 (in spite of entering at #1). "Real Love" by the Beatles was #1 for 2 weeks so Paul McCartney has never had (or been part of) an NM #1 of 3 weeks or more yet. Whether or not he achieves this now depends on the ability of the challengers to overhaul him.
- Muse climb to #2, their biggest hit since "New Born" reached the same position 3 years ago. Their only #1 single to date is the re-issue of "Muscle Museum" in 2000, but "Showbiz" and "Origins Of Symmetry" were both #1 albums.
- Robbie Williams gets the highest new entry, and he has had 5 solo #1s plus two with Take That. But of his solo #1s only one so far was also a UK #1, that being "She's The One / It's Only Us". Radio was co-written by Stephen Duffy, who had his first hit with "Kiss Me" in 1985, peaking at NM #6, and "Icing On The Cake" was actually a bigger hit, reaching #4. Then he disappeared until re-emerging in 1996 as part of combo Me Me Me with a #6 hit "Hanging Around", before forming the Lilac Time where he had his biggest hit "A Dream That We All Share", #3 in 1999. His last chart appearance was in October 2001 with his only single not to reach the top 10, also with the Lilac Time called "This Morning", peaking at #19. Interesting his single was released the same week as Duran Duran, a band he helped to form before leaving it to the Taylors, Rhodes and Le Bon.
The other major potential challenge is from Morrissey, who has reached #1 with both his other singles this year. His new single "Let Me Kiss You" is due to enter this week. There's also a cover version by Nancy Sinatra, and 3 other singles on his label due in. There could technically be 3 Morrissey covers in the chart next week if Nancy enters in addition to A Hundred Reasons' version of "How Soon Is Now" (ok that's a Smiths cover but Morrissey co-wrote it), but although the Hundred Reasons version is far better than that of either TATU or Snake River Conspiracy, I don't think I'll be charting it. Not sure I'll be charting Nancy either. (The Killers' credited B-side is a Morrissey cover). Her dad made his debut in 1986 but with a song he recorded in 1980 at the age of 65. Nancy is just one year younger than that now, she being 64. Frank is not the oldest debutant though, as Larry Adler made his at the age of 80 and Chris Barber and Lonnie Donegan also both made very late debuts in the NM chart as did Engelbert Humperdinck. (We count the age when the single was recorded and not when it entered the chart. Thus we discount Louis Armstrong and Perez Prado who made posthumous debuts but long after their singles were recorded).
Dead 60s enter the chart this week and debut in the UK top 200 so I guess their last single "You're Not The Law" was chart ineligible or it somehow just sold very very few copies.
