This week last year (chart of 29 Nov 2003): Keane were spending a 5th and final week at #1 with "This Is The Last Time". Belle & Sebastian climbed to #2 ready to take over. Cinerama fell from #6 to #17 with "Don't Touch That Dial" having spent 4 weeks at #2. The highest entry was actually at #31 with "Run Thru" by My Morning Jacket (it didn't make the top 10), and obi was making a strong climb (31 to 11) with "To Some Folk" (it peaked at #2), with Alex Parks just behind (34 to 13 this week, peaked at #3). Entering lower than My Morning Jacket were the Open with "Never Enough", at #40. It peaked at #12. (Tramp Attack and the Coral both had entries that week which reached the top 10).
This year: It's Akira The Don who have just achieved a 5th week at #1, Morrissey who has made the tumble (5 to 14) having spent 4 weeks at #2, and it's the Wedding Present, led by David Gedge who is poised to take over. The biggest outside challenge is coming from the Cranebuilders, climbing 23 to 6 and Embrace and Fans Of Kate both also have big climbs looking threatening. The highest entry though is that same single that was #1 last year... and the Open single is also in the chart again.
David Gedge is still seeking his 10th chart-topper. That would put him in front on his own, above George Michael and Brian May with whom he currently shares the record of 9. Now that he is recording again as the Wedding Present, it would set the record at 5 each. Cinerama had several #2 peaks but the Wedding Present have never as yet peaked at that position.
The new Wedding Present album will be called "Take Fountain" and is due for release on 14 February (a Valentine present from Carol?). And if this one does fail to reach #1 (and the Cranebuilders really are putting in a strong challenge) then there's always a chance of "I'm Further North Than You" which was originally called "Edinburgh". I should point out that these songs were originally Cinerama songs, played at Cinerama gigs and really there is no difference between the two now except for the name.
Perhaps some will be surprised that the highest entries are UK chart acts this week. I Dream, Brian McFadden and Shania Twain claim the highest new entries (as opposed to re-entry. By the way, in my chart the difference between a re-entry and a re-issue is only that a re-issue failed to chart previously). As we approach December it is so often the case that acts like these do well in the chart. Brian McFadden's Westlife had their biggest hit (their one big NM hit) with "My Love" around this time in 2000 (peaked at #3!) and Shania Twain's biggest hit "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" reached #2 two years ago (but it's a great song!).
