At the time of the year, the chart is about to slow down as there are few new releases. However there was a big back-log of singles from the last few weeks so no problems finding 13 new entries for this week.
For the second week in a row the highest new entry comes in at #31, but what was a great achievement last week for Kylie may be a bit of a disappointment this week for Morrissey, whose last 3 singles all entered inside the top 10. Still, it has potential to climb, and of course little competition in the next couple of weeks.
Kylie's last solo top 10 hit was "Put Yourself In My Place" which reached #6 exactly 10 years ago (and is one of the 5 Kylie singles that went higher in the NM chart than in the UK where it peaked only at #11). She has had two subsequent top 10 hits but they were duets with Nick Cave and Robbie Williams respectively. Her latest single is also a collaboration though the Scissor Sisters are not credited on it.
There are quite a few seasonal singles that may have just one more week of potential, and that possibly includes Jethro Tull. And if our top bubbler by Hot Pantz gets in the chart next week, its stay may be limited to just 1 week.
I hope the new chart can be compiled on Monday or Tuesday, after which I can then compile the chart of the year, and count that down. The point system used will be slightly different to last year, and I reckon it will be close at the top. It might be Akira The Don - they are still in the top 10, and they were 5 weeks on top, the same number as Morrissey's "Irish Blood English Heart" and Belle & Sebastian's "I'm A Cuckoo". There were also 4 singles that spent 4 weeks at NM #1 this year. The new formula is 300/(x+4) so a week at #6 is worth 30 points, half the value of a week at #1 (60 points) and a week at #56 is worth 5 points, while a week at #71 is worth 4.
I will hopefully compile the Christmas chart early, after which I will be able to compile the chart of the year.
