Section 209-238, and these can all be considered reasonable performers in the chart, generally reaching a top 20 position (a few at the beginning or end of the year are top 10 hits). A lot of good songs in the list, but then there were a lot of good songs in 2004.

26 more. After this I start doing commentaries on each track.
208 Say Something New - Concretes 207 Untouchable - Glenn Tilbrook 206 Plan A - Dandy Warhols 205 You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve - Johnny Boy 204 Bring It On - Alistair Griffin 203 Clean & Neat - Cathy Davey 202 My Band - D12 201 You Stole My Heart Away - Lucky Jim 200 Right To Be Wrong - Joss Stone 199 Makin' Out - Mark Owen 198 Sink 'N' Swim - Plumb 197 So Alive - Ryan Adams 196 Something Good - Bic Runga 195 Red Blooded Woman - Kylie Minogue 194 Thunderbirds Are Go / 3am - Busted 193 Float On - Modest Mouse 192 Elevation - Open 191 Lua - Bright Eyes 190 Better Get Ready For A Fist Fight - Wonder Stuff 189 Sunrise - Norah Jones 188 Hotride - Prodigy 187 The Long Goodbye - A Girl Called Eddy 186 Party For Two - Shania Twain ft Mark McGrath 185 Harder To Breathe - Maroon 5 184 Cold Man's Nightmare - Cathy Davey 183 Obviously - McFly
The Concretes were one of the breakers in the chart in 2004, with 4 new hits. Maroon 5 were another, and Harder To Breathe was their first. They were also major breakers into the UK chart, good to see so many bands achieve that in 2004. McFly also had 4 NM hits in 2004.
Alistair Griffin was the runner up in Fame Academy 2, that was won by Alex Parks, the only reality TV pop series so far that didn't produce a UK #1 single. His single was a double A-side, "Bring It On" which he wrote himself, and "My Lover's Prayer", which was written by Robin Gibb, and on which Robin duetted, he having been one of the judges on the series. The single did moderately well in the NM chart - it was released in January so perhaps might have expected even better.
I think in some ways it's a pity that the Fame Academy acts failed so badly (apart from Lemar, who has been a success), particularly given that Michelle McManus, Sam & Mark and Steve Brookstein all had #1 hits subsequently, two of those with covers of classic songs.
Anyway, time for your comments. And that is everyone, not just Sofie.

Surprise hit for the Prodigy - only their 4th ever NM hit, their 2nd biggest after Out Of Space, and this with a single that was not eligible in the UK. On one of the weeks it was in the chart, a remix of Charly entered the UK top 75 so on that particular week they were in both the UK and NM chart with different singles. "Girls" wasn't a hit at all, and I didn't rate it very highly either in the "dance songs of 2004" poll.

182 Can't Stand Me Now - Libertines The Libertines first broke into the UK and NM charts in 2002 with "What A Waster", and had their biggest NM hit, a #2, early in 2003 with "Time For Heroes", which finished #14 of the year (#16 on new scoring), one of the biggest non-#1s. 2004 saw them split with their lead singer Peter Doherty, although I think he does appear on this particular song and also co-wrote it. This became their biggest UK hit, peaking at #2, although it dropped very fast from the chart and wasn't in the top 100 sellers of the year. Peaked at NM #15.
181 Whatever Happened To Corey Haim - Thrills This band also first reached the NM chart in 2002 with "Santa Cruz (You're Not That Far)" and had their biggest hit in 2003, for them a #1 with the bouncy "Big Sur". This also peaked at #15 the week after the Libertines did.
180 Oh! When The Sun Goes Down - Tramp Attack One of the few successful UK indie-rock bands to break in the early part of this decade were the Coral, and I guess it was inevitable that some other bands would emerge with a similar style. One of those is Tramp Attack, and this single was in the Christmas chart of 2003, peaking at #6. This single finished #129 in the chart of 2003 (122 with new scoring). Adding its points together (new formula only) it is placed #58 in 2004 and #55 in 2003. They didn't reach the UK chart though.
179 1985 - Bowling For Soup Since "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus did so well in the UK chart in 2001, we have had a number of US rock bands like this, usually telling some kind of story, including Bowling For Soup in 2002 with "Girl All The Bad Guys Want". Of course this style seems to have inspired Busted too. On this particular song it is about a woman who lives in the past, thinking how great things were 19 years ago – actually I can see her point, music was generally better back then. Peaked at #16.
178 In A Cage (On Prozac) - My Red Cell Second hit for My Red Cell. Their first single reminded me a bit of the White Stripes, this one was more general up-tempo punk. This band are actually from Wales, like many of the successful indie-rock bands of the last few years. Peaked at #18.
177 Give It Back - Polly Paulusma Solo female folk-style singer-songwriter with a guitar, she had 3 hits in 2004, this was her second hit, and it peaked at #14,
176 Easier To Lie - Aqualung This band had a top 10 hit in the UK in 2002 with "Strange And Beautiful" and that single also reached NM #2, but they haven't done that well in the UK chart since. This peaked at NM #15.
175 Followed The Waves - Auf Der Maur Auf Der Maur are a group, led by Melissa Auf Der Maur, a Canadian singer and guitarist, who at one point in her career joined with Courtney Love in Hole. She's been known to wear very cool boots as well. Peaked at #14.
174 Vice - Razorlight New rock band who had two singles out in 2003 but failed to make any chart impact in the NM chart, and only top 75 status in the UK, however their first single of 2004 "Stumble And Fall" finally broke them into both the UK top 40 and the NM chart. After reaching the UK top 10 with their next single "Golden Touch" we may have hoped even better for this, but it disappointingly gave them only a UK #18 peak. But this did give them their biggest NM hit to date, albeit only #16.
173 Friday's Child - Will Young Somehow I always felt Will Young never really wanted to release either "Evergreen" or his cover of "Light My Fire" but always really wanted to make music like this. They did release a single edit of this song but I didn't buy it and instead played the full-length album version on Radio Earl Purple, thus making it the longest hit single of 2004, with a running time of 9 minutes 1 second. Peaked at #12.
172 Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters Not that common for cover versions to reach the NM chart, but this was the beginning of the year, and besides this was an unusual cover – neither a totally bland carbon-copy of the original nor total sacrilege. (Ok some may say it was). Peaked at #11 and they had better to come.
171 G-dhopping - Dogs Die In Hot Cars Very much on the "I charted them first" list, they had 2 NM top 10 hits before this one, having peaked at NM #3 with "I Love You Cause I Have To". Their 2nd top 10 hit will appear higher up in this chart. This single peaked at NM #13.
170 Startin' To Feel - Engine Similar sounding to the Scissor Sisters on Comfortably Numb, falsetto disco, only this was an original song (as far as I know). Charted in March and reached #13.
169 Peace Sex & Tea - Tat Pure girl-fronted punk. They played live at rock festivals and even released a live single recorded at one of them. This charted in August while they were playing all those festivals and reached #13.
168 Broke Window - Gary Jules Gary Jules was on that Mad World single with Michael Andrews, but in the UK chart this was not a successful follow-up, failing to even break the top 40. In the NM chart it stumbled, fell, rose again, yo-yoed a fair amount, and finally settled for a #28 peak, but it spent a full 10 weeks in the chart thus its high placing here. Technically a much better single than the Mad World cover, and I would say deserving being in the top 180 singles of the year.
167 You're Lovely To Me - Lucky Jim Lucky Jim are a duo, play folk, they sound Irish or American but are actually from Brighton, England, and their first hit was "You Stole My Heart Away". This was their second hit, and it peaked at #12.
166 Colour - HoneyRiders There was a band called Honeyrider who had a hit in 2001 sounding like the Cosmic Rough Riders sounding like the Beach Boys or whoever they were trying to sound like. This is not the same band. These HoneyRiders prefer to sound like Fairground Attraction, the song "Perfect" in particular. Still that was a good song, and so was this and may have done better had it not been for the so obvious plagiarism. Peaked at #14.
165 Real To Me - Brian McFadden After leaving Westlife and possibly splitting with Kerry (though I'm not sure if they've resolved their problems) he wrote a song (well he co-wrote it, his name is on the credits, together with Guy Chambers) about family life being real to him, which included watching football on TV. Guy Chambers, who co-wrote the song (or wrote most of it) wrote a lot of songs with (or for) Robbie Williams. Got to UK #1 and NM #16.
164 Chewing Gum - Annie A pop song that did quite well in the chart, peaking at #13, also a UK top 40 hits.
163 Down To The Sea - Tim Booth Tim Booth was the lead singer of James and had a lot of hits with them, plus a couple with Angelo Badalamenti. His first solo hit peaked at #13.
162 Amazing - George Michael After having broken his deal with Sony to make just one album, "Older", George Michael finally released another album of original material, this time "Patience", and one of the singles taken off it was "Amazing". This single did moderately well, peaking at NM #10, but then we're talking about one of the 3 people who have had 9 NM #1 hits in their career, and I don't think he's likely to get his 10th.
161 Everytime - Britney Spears As was the case with Gary Jules, this single yo-yoed and wouldn't go away, staying in the chart far longer most #21 hits, and longer than her marriages. The video showed her drowning in her bath before getting rescued – it's a very pretty song and she's a very pretty lady, especially when she wears her boots, although she wasn't wearing them in this video.
160 One Evening - Feist I don't know anything about this band but they have a female singer and this was a fairly pleasant slow –midtempo song. Peaked at #15, entering 3 weeks after Britney, then moving above her single but exiting on the same week (thus having a chart run 3 weeks shorter).

#182 is overrated, imo. However, it's ok. Their last song is better though.
#173 is a good song. The album's good as well.
In what way was #172 'total sacrilege'? Ok, the original version was better, but anyway...

159 Leave Right Now - Will Young His biggest NM hit yet, peaked at #10 in the 3rd week of 2004. Adding in its points from 2003 would see this single rise to 94th in 2004 and 95th in 2003.
158 Nature Boy - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds This single actually brought Nick Cave back into the UK top 40 (and is an original song, not a cover of the old standard of this title). This single peaked at NM #11, though he had a bigger hit in 2003 with "He Wants You", a #4 (and was also an original song and nothing like Billie's "She Wants You").
157 Fantastic - Mellow One of those songs I chart that nobody else seems to know about. This is synth-based, almost new-romantic indie-pop, and peaked at #15. Stayed in the chart for 8 weeks (peaking on its 6th).
156 Cakes And Pies - Cinnamon Ok, the UK singles chart had Babycakes, the NM chart had Cakes And Pies, although this was in the chart much earlier in the year. Cinnamon are partly Japanese, and parts of this song are sung in Japanese. It's sung over a monophonic synth, with a few strange noises, and some rather twee lyrics. Great song though, peaked at #10.
155 No Need - Alfie Alfie have been around since 2001, their first hit being "You Make No Bones". This single became their biggest hit to date, peaking at #13. A touch of brass on this one too.
154 I Love A Good Fight - Jobriath This was released on the same week as Morrissey's "Let Me Kiss You" and was one of many singles released on Attack Records that week, Morrissey's label. Jobriath was a failed US glam rock star of the 1970s, but Morrissey was a big fan and decided to revive this song (recorded around 30 years earlier), also releasing a compilation album. Peaked at NM #12. There were rumours that Jobriath himself died in the 1980s of AIDS but he may still be alive.
153 Everything - Fefe Dobson One of two songs around at the same time entitled "Everything", both by female singers, this one outshone Alanis Morissette to peak at #13.
152 That's All Right - Elvis Presley In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Elvis's recording of this song, they re-released it. Peaked at UK #3 but didn't get as high in the chart of the year as it did here, as it dropped out fairly quickly. Peaked at NM #9.
151 The Wild Son - Veils The Veils are as yet unrecognised in the UK – maybe that will change in 2005. They've had many NM hits. This single peaked at #13.
150 Pressure Point - Zutons This was the song that broke the Zutons into the UK top 40, and they had more NM hits than any other act in 2004, with 5 in total. Their first NM hit was Creepin' And A Crawlin' in 2003. This single peaked at #10, and they have a bigger hit further up.
149 Stacy's Mom - Fountains Of Wayne Fountains Of Wayne had a few UK hits in 1997, including that wonderful Christmas song "I Want An Alien For Christmas". Since then they'd been forgotten in the UK, but with the mini rock-revival in 2004 they had their biggest hit yet. This was also an NM #9 peak.
148 Born In The 70s - Ed Harcourt Ed Harcourt had his first NM hit in 2001 with "Something In My Eye" and had a UK top 40 hit in 2003 with "All Of Your Days Will Be Blessed". This single came out near the end of the year, around the same time as Brian McFadden's "Irish Son" so we had two songs with a male singer singing about his childhood. This one peaked at #14.
147 You're Not The Law - Dead 60s Part of the ska-revival, this sounded just like the Specials, particularly like Ghost Town. Peaked at #11.
146 Southside Of The Street - Zombies One of the great comebacks of 2004, but unrecognised, in fact this single was so hard to find that it was one I ordered online. Actually, it sounds a bit like Van Morrison (who did a song of a similar title, the Bright Side Of The Road, and this song is not that dissimilar). Peaked only at #14, perhaps should have done better.
145 Ding Dong Song - Günther One of those infectious euro-pop hits, this peaked at NM #12 and I think it achieved a similar peak in the UK, which surprised me as I thought it would be a top 5 smash. I think it was released a bit too early in the year – in May, when people would not yet have come back from their holidays.
144 Massive Crush - Barbs Punk group, female fronted, the verses spoken rather than sung, their second hit of the year, the first was "The Importance Of Being Evil", this one peaked at #12.
143 Maybe Someday - Ordinary Boys One of the big breakers of the year, but didn't achieve what they might have done. Perhaps they will in 2005. This was their first single and peaked at #12.
142 You're Gone - Marillion Apt title, as it broke the record for the highest position in the UK top 40 for a one-week only hit, at #7. In the NM chart it peaked only at #11 but stayed in the chart a lot longer. In the 1980s, they used to have Fish as their lead vocalist and had 4 consecutive NM #1s as well as the biggest album of 1985.
141 Do No Wrong - Thirteen Senses Thirteen Senses had 3 big hits in 2004, in fact this was the smallest of the three, and towards the end of the year they broke into the UK top 40, and are re-releasing their first single. This was their 2nd single, and peaked at #12.
140 Light In Her Window - Golden Virgins This was the song that introduced me to Golden Virgins, a slow-paced ballad – I know many of you think I chart too many of those. This peaked at #12. Their next single Renaissance Kid was more uptempo but peaked much lower.

A touch of brass on this one too.Don't remember this at all. 154 I Love A Good Fight - Jobriath This was released on the same week as Morrissey's "Let Me Kiss You" and was one of many singles released on Attack Records that week, Morrissey's label. I never charted it though. 153 Everything - Fefe Dobson One of two songs around at the same time entitled "Everything", both by female singers, this one outshone Alanis Morissette to peak at #13. Don't remember this at all. Like this one. Good to see that when it was released, it wasn't released as some sort of remix. 150 Pressure Point - Zutons This was the song that broke the Zutons into the UK top 40, and they had more NM hits than any other act in 2004, with 5 in total. Their first NM hit was Creepin' And A Crawlin' in 2003. This single peaked at #10, and they have a bigger hit further up.This was the first song of theirs to reach my chart, back in February. Can't stand this 147 You're Not The Law - Dead 60s Part of the ska-revival, this sounded just like the Specials, particularly like Ghost Town. Peaked at #11.This is their best single out of the two they've released. Peaked only at #14, perhaps should have done better.I don't see how this sounds like the Van Morrison song. I'll have to listen to both to work out what you mean. Great song. 145 Ding Dong Song - Günther One of those infectious euro-pop hits, this peaked at NM #12 and I think it achieved a similar peak in the UK, which surprised me as I thought it would be a top 5 smash. I think it was released a bit too early in the year – in May, when people would not yet have come back from their holidays.I also thought this would a Top 5 hit in the UK. Rather surprised it wasn't. 144 Massive Crush - Barbs Punk group, female fronted, the verses spoken rather than sung, their second hit of the year, the first was "The Importance Of Being Evil", this one peaked at #12.Don't remember that other song mentioned. This is in my bubblers list right now. Likely to chart Friday. 143 Maybe Someday - Ordinary Boys One of the big breakers of the year, but didn't achieve what they might have done. Perhaps they will in 2005. This was their first single and peaked at #12.Don't remember this one at all. 142 You're Gone - Marillion Apt title, as it broke the record for the highest position in the UK top 40 for a one-week only hit, at #7. This peaked at #12. Their next single Renaissance Kid was more uptempo but peaked much lower.I like this one. And I'm one of the people who think you chart too many slow songs, but so do I.

My guess is that the Japanese bit of Cakes And Pies is simply a translation of what is being sung in English.
Ok, the Zombies song is not that similar to Van Morrison, the tune is different but the style is similar (kind of jazzy style), albeit the Zombies one is also a little bit slower.
The lead singer of Marillion since 1989 has been Steve Hogarth.
Now, would anyone else like to comment?
