I missed doing this last year. But hey, this feature will be back now. Later today I will be switching REP to be playing the top songs of the year but I haven't decided how many will be playing yet - maybe the top 100.
I count down an eighth of the remaining chart at a time. So I start with the first 76. When I get to about #200 I will start adding some commentary for each one.
609 Retreat! Retreat! - 65 Days Of Static 608 Million Pound Note - Trash Money 607 Long Night - Corrs 606 Give It All Away - Natasha Sohl 605 Modern Art / My Little Brother - Art Brut 604 No More Tears - Sandra McCracken 603 Waiting For You - Seal 602 Burning Up - Beach 601 Sacred Heart - Cass McCombs 600 She's The Blade - Sugarcult 599 Oh England (We're Gonna Win The Cup) - Junk TV ft Top Corner 598 Rollover DJ - Jet 597 I Cannot Give You My Love - Cliff Richard 596 Can't Turn Back - Speedway 595 Dance With My Father - Luther Vandross 594 Ladies Night - Atomic Kitten ft Kool & The Gang 593 Rainy Day - Anjali 592 I Promise - Stacie Orrico 591 Room In Brooklyn - John Squire 590 Misfit - Elefant 589 It Looks Like You - Evan Dando 588 Warm Night - Concretes 587 Give U One 4 Christmas - Hot Pantz 586 Nobody's Home - Avril Lavigne 585 Hit The City - Mark Lanegan Band 584 I Refuse - Sense Field 583 Since You're In Love - Jesse Malin 582 Falling Like Stars / Christmas Song - Bird 581 Wonderful Night - Fatboy Slim 580 Somebody Hurt You - A Girl Called Eddy 579 Wouldn't Change A Thing - Haven 578 Down Here - Stateless 577 Breathe Easy - Blue 576 The Rat - Walkmen 575 Barefoot In The Head - A Man Called Adam 574 Up Here - Powder 573 Some Girls - Rachel Stevens 572 Something's Going On (And On) - Lambchop 571 The Hunger - Distillers 570 All I Want - Wet Wet Wet 569 Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield 568 You Will You Won't - Zutons 567 Colours In Waves - South 566 Look What You've Done - Jet 565 You Really Got Me [RI] - Kinks 564 Love Life - Performance 563 Let Me Move On - Gene 562 Crickets Sing For Annamaria - Emma Bunton 561 Radio - Ludes 560 Don't Tell Me You're Sorry - S Club 8 559 Helpless - Maupa 558 Take The Box - Amy Winehouse 557 Nighttime Anytime - Constantines 556 Leave It All Behind - Features 555 Luminosity - Empathy 554 What You Waiting For - Gwen Stefani 553 She Came Home For Christmas [RE] - Mew 552 Viva England - Undercover 551 Moviestar - Stereophonics 550 C'mon C'mon - Von Bondies 549 Good Vibrations - Brian Wilson 548 Cold Cold Heart - Woodstar 547 I Love You More Than Rock 'N' Roll - Thunder 546 Close My Eyes - Open 545 Catalyst - Oceansize 544 The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice 543 Can't Do Right For Doing Wrong - Erin Rocha 542 Smash It Up - Damned 541 (We Wish You) A Protein Christmas - Fall 540 Confusion - Zutons 539 Cinnamon Girl - Prince 538 Don't Steal Our Sun - Thrills 537 Starcrossed - Ash 536 Big Thing Coming - Stranglers 535 Not Me Not I - Delta Goodrem 534 Don't Hurt Yourself - Marillion
A lot of these early ones are singles that spent just 1 week in the chart, many of them in the first chart (having charted in 2003) or in the last chart of 2004 (having just entered).
I have done a "convert" of 2003 to the new formula too, so when we get to the bigger hits which crossed between the years, we can see where it would finish in the chart of each year by adding the points together (though not necessarily its position in 2003 and 2004 combined).

Difficult to explain how come "Butterfly Kisses" got to be in there. The song charted mid-March, i.e. past the very early phase of the year. However I think this was the week I increased to a top 60. Single entered at #57 and peaked at #53. There are times I do look for more diversity, so will often chart something that sounds a bit different to the rest of what is in the chart.

Some of those songs are still in the chart (eg Baby Shambles with Killamangiro) so would be higher once their chart run is finished.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy was a favourite of John Peel - I haven't heard this song yet in the Festive 50 but certainly it might be there.
"Not In Love" is the only appearance by Kelis in the chart in 2004. Perhaps she was a bit unlucky with "Trick Me" - I seem to remember I chopped it from the CD playlist but it may have remained on the radio one. "Milkshake" was just crap though.
Some of the aritsts in there had much bigger hits in 2004 that appear higher up. Pink Grease and Dido both had top 5 hits.
#439 should appeal to Andy - does he still like them?

amazed at how low Snow Patrol were with Chocolate just incredible. There were 522 songs better than it this year no way howzay, points year ends dont work I know they are tuff otherwise but they really dont work when you get results like this.
Anyway whine over maybe you are just mad! hehe

I know points-based are never accurate because some weeks of the year are much stronger than others.
The only other option would be for me to keep scores as the chart is being compiled which would be similar to sales and then at the end of the year to compile the sums of these. That would make chart compilation very very hard to do.
American Idiot by Green Day did do surprisingly badly in the chart. I don't know why, though I do seem to recall there were quite a few songs out like that at the time including the My Chemical Romance single which was riding high in the chart. At least the new Green Day single is doing a lot better, currently at #10 and will probably go top 5 at least.

Disappointingly low showing for Nick Cave's "There She Goes My Beautiful World". This was one of the many entries in November which was such a strong month I had to increase the size of the chart.
Also disappointingly low showing for Mars Volta with Televators. Don't know why it's so low.
Covers don't chart that often so Agnetha Faltzkog's return was perhaps a surprise. I really don't know why she returned with an album of cover versions though. Maybe it's ok for the Beautiful South to do one, because it's not so long since they released an album of original material, but it's hardly the way to make a comeback.
Michelle's appearance comes courtesy of being in a month with very little else. And of all those Euro 2004 songs, that cover of "Come On Eileen" makes its appearance here. The original was an NM #1 and remains a classic, in spite of comments I have seen others make on it. This version, however, deserves no better than its placing, if it even deserves that.
I will state that this list is mainly singles peaking in the 20s or 30s. Those that peaked in the 20s seemed to manage 4-week runs, those in the 30s managed 5-week runs.

403 The End Of The World - Cure 359 We Are - Ana Johnsson Fab choice in the Cure, awful one in Ana Johnsson! Also agree with your comments on Nick Cave, I'd have liked to have seen it higher. Will comment more as the song numbers get higher...

The songs are supposedly getting better now. There are quite a lot of good songs in there - some of these were top 25 hits but had relatively short chart runs. I'm a bit surprised to see the Charlatans so low - I thought that song had done better in my chart. They do have another single in the top 100 of the year, and Travis have 2 in there.

Maybe because radio stations still refuse to play most of the great stuff, simply because they are on small labels?
And maybe the big labels are bent on releasing archetypal indie, i.e. the sort of song that all sound similar?
And, what is probably true too, is that when you are exposed to only a small amount of indie in a sea of rubbish, the indie will often sound better than it really is, i.e. better than it sounds against other indie.
I mentioned that about Alex Parks. She sounded great on Fame Academy against other Fame Academy singers, but her single "Cry" was competing against the likes of Belle & Sebastian etc. and she sounded nothing special.

Melys never charted with Chinese Whispers in 2001 - never even knew the single existed before the John Peel's Festive 50 announced it as the #1. Eyeliner on the other hand got into the chart and is at #266 of the year. I therefore expected it also to feature well in the Festive 50 but it had a disappointingly low position of #38 (I think).
Victoria Beckham's inflated position was due to it being released around this time last year, when not many others are releasing singles. She was hoping for a UK #1 but a #3 was not bad. I think Geri's "Move It" only peaked at #4 (though obviously that was later in the year).
