9 new entries this week, so we've had 22 entries in the last 2 weeks, not too unhealthy a situation. And the top 5 has started moving.
The next couple of weeks will be hard, as there are not many new releases to replace those near the bottom, and now there's a shortage of bubblers (as you can see).
At least Interpol have ensured this time around that they are almost certain to chart.
Kylie gets her first ever top 2 hit - but will have to wait another week for a possible #1, and has Morrissey now in a far more challenging position than before. Still, last time there was an 8th January chart, Melanie C achieved her #1 with Northern Star, so perhaps that's a good omen for pop acts.
1st January was the date of the first ever chart, that in 1977. Therefore the chart has completed one full 28-year cycle. On that particular chart I was picking songs from the top 20 of that week, so "Ring Out Solstice Bells" was just 8 places too low to be considered. (Although not much later I brought in top 30 hits and subsequently lower positions. However, because the main radio countdown was a top 20, I wouldn't always get to hear the songs in the 21-30 positions). "Ring Out Solstice Bells" was the highest new entry of the chart of 25 December 1976 (at #28), a chart which also included as new entries "Daddy Cool" by Boney M at #31 (their debut), "You're More Than A Number In My Little Red Book" by the Drifters at #32 and way down at #37 "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" by Julie Covington. All of those were UK top 10 hits and were also NM hits. There was no new chart published for 1 January 1977 in the UK.
