She had her first hit in August 1988. She was name-checked in two NM #1 hits in 2003, but finally gets to be #1 after 16 years and 5 months. Now according to my reckoning that puts her behind Ozzy Osbourne and Sparks but ahead of everyone else. Ozzy Osbourne's was comeback after a long absence, and Sparks also cameback after an absence and reworked an old classic. Kylie required (in my calculations) 20 chart hits (and numerous flops) to get to the top.
It was by no means a certainty - this week Morrissey made a very strong challenge and I think next week it will be just too strong and so Kylie will probably be limited to just one week on top. Still "I Believe In You" becomes her 6th single to go higher in the NM chart than it did in the UK, the others being "What Do I Have To Do", "Shocked", "Where The Wild Roses Grow" (with Nick Cave), "Put Yourself In My Place" and "Some Kind Of Bliss".
At this time of year when I'm short of new material to chart, often whatever is available gets in the chart. Ofte I will be biased against re-issues but for now Elvis is going to be filling in the gaps and the chart could soon be swarming with Elvis hits. Actually "All Shook Up" and "Jailhouse Rock" were both eligible for the NM chart in September 1977 when they were in the UK top 50, so perhaps they should have the [RI] tag, although "One Night" (due this week) has never been chart-eligible before. The singles were originally credited to Elvis Presley with the Jordanaires, they being his backing group who I think included Lieber and Stoller who wrote "Jailhouse Rock". They also wrote "Hound Dog", "Don't" and "King Creole" but not his other hits. The re-issue bias will work against him though in that these won't be major hits, just like "Good Vibrations" failed to set the chart alight although it's obviously a classic.
