Morrissey gets his 8th solo #1. This count includes his duet with Siouxsie, but not his #1 with the Smiths. Counting that one his total is 9, a record he jointly holds. The others are David Gedge, Brian May and George Michael - David Gedge as part of 2 groups, Brian May mostly with Queen plus one solo hit, and George Michael including one with Wham. David Gedge has the most weeks - the Wedding Present 14 weeks and Cinerama 24 weeks, totally 38. Morrissey's total from his first 8 number ones (including the Smiths) is only 29, and so he won't be able to overtake David Gedge with this single. The next Wedding Present single is released on 31 January, by the way.
Elsewhere, Pink Grease get the highest entry - and entered the UK top 40 thus removing themselves from the "least successful chart act" tag in the UK. I don't know if they are going to re-release either "Fever" or "The Pink G-R-Ease". The chart is certainly not short of re-issues right now, and it's not just Elvis. Longview (on the CD as Long-View) have included "When You Sleep" as a double A-side with "Coming Down", and for the Killers, Thirteen Senses and Coheed & Cambria, straightforward re-issues of singles from last year, of which only the Killers was a UK hit last time, and that only #28. Coheed & Cambria didn't reach the UK top 200 this time so I guess it must have been ineligible. Perhaps it will do better on the NM chart than its #53 peak it achieved in 2004.
The new entry at #52 is also a remake - although the original Tom Hark was by Tom Elias and his Zig Zag Jive Flutes and peaked at UK #2 in 1958, that was an instrumental. The 1980 version by the Piranhas added vocals, and peaked at NM #2 and UK #6. (David Bowie kept it out of NM #1 with "Ashes To Ashes"). Back then Brighton were just enjoying the start of their 2nd consecutive season in the top division, having been promoted in 1979 and not being relegated until 1983. They were playing their home games at the Goldstone Ground in Hove, but that was sold for redevelopment and they had to groundshare with Gillingham for a while (which is nowhere near Brighton). Now they are playing in an Athletics stadium, but want a new stadium in Falmer, which is what this song is about. The Piranhas, who come from Brighton, play on this single too.
