The top 4 are now static - I do think it is taking a while for the year to take shape. Once again, none of the new releases from the first 3 weeks of the year have really impressed me that much, it just seems artists are reluctant to release their best singles at this time, perhaps a bit of laziness in that they know they will chart anyway.
At least of the 13 entries this week, 12 of them are new songs. Four are by acts making their first chart appearance. I'd never heard of Mates Of State before this single, which is a 4-song EP thus was not eligible for the UK chart. I'd never heard of Andrew Bird before either. Jamie Scott and Rooster's names have appeared on the chart listing before but only in the bubblers section, with "Just" and "Come Get Some" last year.
The one that is not, of course, is Elvis, who now has 4 singles in the chart, a joint record with John Lennon who had 4 in the chart on 24 January 1981, exactly 24 years ago. He had all of his in the top 18, as the chart was then, holding positions 1, 2, 6 and 17 on that week. Meanwhile none of Elvis's singles are in the top 18, the highest one currently at #19, though that may change next week, and he's expected also a 5th entry.
Of those who have charted before, the Others have their second NM hit, the first one was "This One's For The Poor", then their first UK chart hit "Stan Bowles" did not reach the NM chart. Minnie Driver charted last year with "Everything I Have In My Pocket". I don't know why her singles are not sellling.
Mercury Rev and Feeder have both had singles that were #1 early in the year, Mercury Rev in 2002 and Feeder in 2003.
Asia have not been in the NM chart since the early 1980s, and I'm not sure they even charted then. Steve Howe though has been in the chart with Yes, GTR (having a #1) and also played Spanish guitar on Queen's "Innuendo" (another #1).
Soulwax were one of the only few indie/rock acts to break the UK chart in 2000. They only just managed it though with "Too Many DJs". Their first NM hit was "Conversation Intercom" in 1999. Athlete had their first UK top 40 and NM hit in 2002 with "You Got The Style". They hadn't got higher than #31 though with "El Salvador" before this single, which has charted at UK #4.
