In the UK chart Elvis has been the undisputed "king" with more #1s than anyone else. Another record has belonged to the Wedding Present, that of the most hit singles in a year. Elvis is now, however, after both records, although the Wedding Present will still hold the record of the most new hits in a year, as Elvis's are all re-issues.
In the NM chart, Elvis was chasing a different record - the biggest gap between #1 hits, a record which currently belongs to a different Elvis, Elvis Costello, with a 20 year gap between 1979 and 1999. (Don Henley had a bigger gap, 1977 to 1998, but returned with a re-issue and his first #1 was with the Eagles). Meanwhile David Gedge has been long time chasing the record of having 10 NM #1s with his two bands, the Wedding Present and Cinerama.
Well this week David Gedge achieves his record and Elvis fails to achieve his, although he does have the record of the most singles in the chart at a time, now numbering 6.
David Gedge has had to be patient. After "Health & Efficiency" became #1 in 2001, he had two #3s in 2002 and then two #2s, which spent a total of 9 weeks in the #2 position, but couldn't quite get that #1. Meanwhile, Morrissey added himself to the list of those who have had 9. Note that purists will claim that Morrissey's total is 8, as one of his was with the Smiths, that Brian May has just 1 and it's Queen who have 8. George Michael also has 8 as one of his was with Wham! and Blondie have 8 so those acts are all tied, and David Gedge whose split is 5-5 is way down the list.
Either way, David Gedge did write or co-write and sing lead vocals on all his #1s.
Elsewhere - a high debut for Patrick Wolf, who reminds me a lot of Marc Almond. Anything with "Libertine" in it might be popular right now or may some confused music fans though it was a Libertines single.
Bloc Party get in the chart - they had two singles last year neither of which even reached the bubblers.
Hugh Cornwell was lead singer of the Stranglers.
