In the last few weeks, great songs have actually been getting their just deserts and topping the UK singles chart, which means that the top end of my chart is starting to look "familiar". In fact the "automatically generated" chart reversed the top 3, and had I left it that way and put MCR at #1 next week I'd have had 3 in a row UK/NM #1s, something that in the past has happened just once in 1980 with Jam/Detroit Spinners/Blondie around April of that year.
Sometimes I go through phases of not re-charting songs that have charted before and had a re-issue, however the chart has 4 such songs (Bedouin Soundclash, Corinne Bailey-Rae, Blueskins and Blackbud). Of those Blueskins was the biggest hit first time around, peaking at #7 in 2004.
It is exactly 17 years since "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" topped the chart for Pandora's Box - it reached #1 on 21 October 1989. Celine Dion's version reached #2 in 1996. It's difficult to see why they chose that and not a new song for Meat Loaf's release to promote the new album but it's done ok in the UK chart, reaching #6. I have bought the new album although I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet with my #1s show on - the Pandora's Box version came on yesterday during the show and really it rocks - in fact back in 1996 when I had a proper album chart the Celine Dion release inspired the Pandora's Box album back into the chart and it reached #2 - I would listen to it in the car on the way back from work.
Now my favourite song from that album is the very last one - The Future Ain't What It Used To Be and I was hoping they would give that to some diva to perform - both Heather Small and Oleta Adams were candidates in my mind for the song (the original singer was Gina Taylor, I don't know what ever became of her. I don't know whatever became of Oleta Adams either). Anyway, Meat Loaf has included that song on the new album so we'll see what has been made of it now. I might note that two of the songs on Original Sin were sung by Ellen Foley (well she narrated the Want Ad rather than singing it),. She was the female singer on Paradise By The Dashboard Light as well - the NM #1 of all time.
