My faith in Dandy*'s good taste is restored! Though you seem to have forgotten to mention the sensational A Stroke Of Luck in the top 5 tracks... Have I lost you again yet? Garbage seem to unify fans of all genres for some reason. *makes mental note to throw in a populist choice every 10 or so...*

#76 Black Box Recorder "The Facts Of Life"
Top 5 life facts: The Art Of Driving, The Facts Of Life, The English Motorway System, May Queen, Sex Life
This album is a little bit like Sophie Ellis Bextor does sinister and obscure. Sarah Nixey sings in the Queen's English and sounds somewhat disturbing at times when discussing sex and, er, English motorway systems. The first single was the title track and it's an amusing ditty about love when growing up as she tells us "it's just the facts of life, there's no masterplan, walk me home from school, I'll let you hold my hand". 'Sex Life' is really just a rehash of Blur's 'Girls And Boys' but still works. Opener 'The Art Of Driving' is another typically British song as she uses the knack of driving in an attempt to very loosely discuss sex, "You got the hang of steering, now try stepping on the brakes". Hmmmm, I don't feel I'm making this sound very good but it is, honest! You'll note their is two covers above also, the official one is the hideous meat one but, understandably, it was insisted it be covered up by the nicer white band one for us oh so British consumers.

#94 Mew "And The Glass Handed Kites"
Top 5 tracks: The Zookeeper's Boy, Special, Apocalypso, Chinaberry Tree, White Lips Kissed
The first of a handful of albums that are new to me this year is this otherworldy effort from Mew. This is one of the most epic albums I own and is unashamedly trying to soar with mixtures of lush vocals, strings and guitars. 'The Zookeeper's Boy' is one of the very best singles of the year as guitars crash about before melting into the heavenly repeated 'Are you my lady?' chorus. It's certainly my favourite moment here but yet is more of a central part of the album rather than a standout - this is one of those albums that just works as a whole work with the tracks effortlessly sliding into eachother but with enough differences to make them individual. I'm doing a rubbish job at summing this up as I don't know exactly what to compare it to, maybe The Cocteau Twins doing blissful prog rock?!!!! Oh... just go and listen to samples!
YAY! I like this album a lot, should listen to it more...

#75 DJ Shadow "The Private Press"
Private 5 Presses: You Can't Go Home Again, Blood On The Motorway, Fixed Income, Giving Up The Ghost, Six Days
The second long player from DJ Shadow was one of those albums I couldn't stop listening to a few years back and would always be in my top 20 albums - I've gone off it a bit as it's new position reflects but it's still got some darn fine moments. 'You Can't Go Home Again' has always been a big Dandy favourite and you may already know it as I think it was once used for the goals bit on Match Of The Day (I know zilch about football but I always know the background music! ) - you would also know the haunting chords of 'Blood On The Motorway' from a mobile advertising campaign from a few years ago (O2 maybe?). Six Days is another highlight and is slightly reminiscent of a hip hop version of a Moby track, check out the Soulwax remix also as it's great. Only clumsy and relatively short rapping tracks such as 'Walkie Talkie' and 'Mashin' On The Motorway' let it down, not as pioneering as his first album then but still a fantastic listen.

A slightly tardy response maybe, but I agree with what you said about Garbage. I do love V2.0 and I merely like the last 2 albums but the debut is their outstanding effort without a doubt.

#74 Aimee Mann "Bachelor no.2 or The Last Remains Of The Dodo"
Underrated 5 tracks: Red Vines, Deathly, Calling It Quits, How Am I Different?, Save Me
My top albums lists are always represent a snapshot for me as this proves. Normally this would be at least top 30 and it's a truly fantastic album, however she has released a couple of other albums that I always turn to instead of late so this has to settle for the mid 70s (I am appalled at myself even as a type this ). Aimee Mann is, in my opinion, the most underrated artist ever. She writes clever, tuneful and emotive songs that are matched by nobody else and there are plenty of examples on offer here... 'Red Vines' is classic Aimee while 'Deathly' was the song that made me notice her in the first place ("Now that I've met you, would you object to, never seeing eachother again" - ) in the film Magnolia - the film is a bit rubbish really but her soundtrack is excellent, albeit a few songs feature on this and it so it's not necessarily worth getting both. The other Dandy favourite is 'Calling It Quits' with it's amusingly downbeat yet camp lyrics - "Now he's numbering himself among the masterminds 'cause he's hit upon the leverage of valentines, listing dialogue from Judy Garland storylines where get-tough girls turn into goldmines" ). If you were to investigate one artist as a result of my list, I'd recommend Aimee.

#73 Alanis Morissette "Jagged Little Pill"
Period 5 Pain: You Learn, You Oughta Know, Right Through You, Head Over Feet, Not The Doctor
Oh everyone knows this already... Alanis splits with boyfriend, Alanis not very happy, Alanis write music to get back at him, Alanis sells zillions of albums, Alanis a bit more happy. The acoustic 10th anniversary version of this has made me fall in love with it again and shown that this album is basically a collection of very good songs. 'You Learn' was always my favourite for some unknown reason but it's 'You Oughta Know' which storms out and bites your head off, glorious stuff. The acoustic album improves on 'Right Through You' and 'Not The Doctor' and I'd recommend having a listen if you haven't already. I do feel a bit sorry for Alanis now though as she's been all but forgotten and is laughed at by almost all the critics, it's so easy to forget just what a breath of fresh air she was when this was released and how influential it's been on today's female singers.
