#72 The Chemical Brothers "Exit Planet Dust"
Top 5 tricks: In Dust We Trust, Song To The Siren, Leave Home, One Too Many Mornings, Alive Alone
First album in the countdown from my favourite dance group, this is their debut album. It's more basic and simplistic than later efforts but it's none the worse for it. The Chemical Brothers template is evident here as Tim Burgess guests on a track (would be replaced by Mr Gallagher on the next record when they had more credibility and funds). The other guest vocalist is Beth Orton whom I have this record to thank for discovering (2 of her albums were in the final 15 to be discounted for this list). 'Song To The Siren' was where it all started for them a couple of years previously and it's included here along with other singles 'Leave Home', 'Chemical Beats' and 'Life Is Sweet'. It's to their credit that they've now superceeded the big beat tag and managed to stay relevant in a manner that most of their peers have not (Fatboy Slim etc).

#71 Blur "13"
These 5 Rock: Tender, Coffee & TV, Trimm Trabb, No Distance Left To Run, Mellow Song
Hello, we're Blur and we've really gone past the point of caring about chart success so we're making and album of somewhat obscure and long progressive tracks and you dear fans will learn to deal with it. This album took some getting used to for me but once I'd gotten past the misleading and misrepresentative singles then I discovered a very rewarding album indeed. 'Tender' is Blur's best single (and song) ever, there's just no debate there. 'Coffee & TV' is quite possibly their second best single ever also. It's very much a Damon Albarn album and you can tell and understand why Graham Coxon was starting to feel alienated by this point in the band's career - it remains however a rare personal side to Blur where they stop hiding being mockney accents and Britpop masks and emerged as true pioneers of a quality that their peers (Radiohead excepted!) could only dream of matching.

I love "13" but I still prefer "Modern Life Is Rubbish". Swamp Song is my favourite non-single...
