Even Damita Jo had better first week sales I actually thought she would pull off a number 1 record with at least over 400k sales. Hopefully the repackaged version does better (which will include a duet with Mariah Carey) I have a feeling after 20 Y.O. Janet will release an amazing record getting back all her old fans, maybe she will ditch that filthy troll (JD..) and release a Startin' Over type record!

But no 2 is decent enough. I wouldn't say it was catastrophic. Album sales are always in the low figures these days.

The fact that 20 years on she can have a #2 debut and sell over 250,000 copies in a week is impressive.
However when you add in the fact that she did Oprah and this is all she managed...
Watch it sink lie a stone...

I'm not going to diss a #2 record. It might have legs and sell 5 million, or it might drop faster than Damita Ho. Don't forget she released it with different covers, so thousands of sales were just desperate fans buying all 4 versions. Janet has to be disappointed though. Not even by the chart placing so much, but by the terrible critical response and general disinterest from non-diehard fans. Virgin must be in shock at international sales - it's flopping everywhere. A short question: How do you think the executives at Virgin are feeling about JD's $20 million producers fee right about now?

It's early days in fairness to her, some more singles may boost sales, the tour and maybe some more appearances. But its not going to do very well in the UK, I can't see the new single making it rise that much.

everyone keeps talking about the reissue, but come on, do you remember she had a reissue for Damita Jo planned alongside a world tour, but both were scrapped when the album started sinking like a stone. I think the album would have to break 1 million before Christmas for Virgin to even consider it. When albums like Mimi were reissued, it was because they sold so much the label knew that it'd strike gold a second time, they likely would've never considered doing a re-release with Glitter

I've learned that The Velvet Robe only sold 200k in it's first week...so I guess 20 Y.O. can be a hit,the thing is at least Velvet Robe did well internationaly...can't say the same for Janet's new album. I guess we will have to wait after a few weeks.
nfo, that's not the case all the time. Sales for Jessica Simpson's recored In This Skin were doing horribly. Then they re-released the record and it did amazing going three times platinum.
Don't get me wrong number 2 is really good but I never thought she would lose to Ludacris.

Remember, "Call On Me" started low on the charts and eventually rose to #1 on the R&B chart. "20 Y.O." is already #1 on the R&B chart, and right behind Ludacris' CD on the Hot 100. And in Janet's defense, Ludacris -DID- have the price of the album lowered to $7.99, while Janet's was still $10. For a poor teenager trying to make a quick decision, Ludacris would be the thriftiest choice.

Then they re-released the record and it did amazing going three times platinum. well, Velvet Rope was a very well-received album critically, it was perhaps a little too dark and deep for instant digestion from Janet fans who were hoping she would remake "janet.", but... the album had enough songs on the album that made good enough singles. 20 Y.O. seems generally agreed on that Janet is just jumping on the JD bandwagon and losing herself in his production. The two albums are not fair to compare. Jessica Simpson's album wasn't doing that bad before the reissue came out. It was in the top 20 and "With You" was a huge radio hit, just the reissue was cheaper and came with a DVD and struck right at the time that Jessica needed a third single out. The album would've done reasonable with or without the reissue, sales had picked up big time by them anyway. Shakira's reissue is a much better example than Jessica, because Shakira's album was lingering around #194 on Billboard before the reissue, and went back to the top 10 as soon as the reissue with "Hips Don't Lie" hit.

Of course it's not a flop (in the US) - yet. Although, it's fair to say that it hasn't gotten off to a good start! This'll generate more bad publicity for Janet and put radio programmers further off her.
Let's hope Clap Your Hands is a good enough song for her to launch the repackaged version...
