Seeing as my last thread (http://fatherandy2.proboards35.com/index.cgi?board=indie&action=display&thread=1110362483) had so little interest I thought I'd delve more into even more into lesser known bands I like as I'm cheeky that way...
I heavily vouch for each of these groups and promise they are worth buying if you see them. Should be able to find used/cheap.
Explosions In The Sky - First heard them at ATP and they blew me away. 4 member band from Austin, TX and no singing. Described as 'Moody and dynamic instrumental indie rock' there is almost nothing like them (some comparisons to Magwai or Godspeed! You Black Emperor'. If you ever thought instrumental is boring then listen to them and be amazed! They have two albums and while Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever is a better album (and their first) I'd suggest starting with Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place.
The American Analog Set Another Texan band who actually discovered Explosions in the Sky - though have very a different sound and do sing in their songs. The best I can describe it as is drone-pop. 5 Albums out so lots to choose from and all good with not much difference in albums. To pick one to start I'll go with From Our Living Room to Yours which is their second album. I really like their Updates EP which remixes a lot of their songs with an electronica feel.
Yo La Tengo Still surprised how many people haven't heard about them as they've been going since '86. They are quirky with music from Indie-Pop (almost twee at times) to noise-pop (Sonic Youth influences - or even vice versa!) can be heard. They typically stick to Pop templates, though you'd of course never hear them on the radio (not that kind of Pop. They have a lot of albums but if you start off with And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out or I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One you can't go wrong.
Toad the Wet Sprocket Perfect Acoustic Indie Pop from another yankee band. It's mostly light and the album to start off with is Fear
Belle and Sebastian, Sodatream,Camera Obscura and a lesser degree The Delgados and Mull Historica Society If you like B&S then check out these other bands listed. All similar - but the albums listed here are better than B&S's weaker albums Sodatream-Minor Revival, Camera Obscura-Underachievers Please Try Harder, The Delgados-The Great Eastern and Mull Historica Society-This Is Hope
M83 French electronica with some resemblace to Air, but much more dreamy and yet heavier (if you can imagine). Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts is amazing.
Califone Out of Chicago and hard to put into a genre. Something like Blues Rock or Post-Rock/Experimental. It's quite down-tempo with a bit of slide guitar, but simply great music. Quicksand/Cradlesnakes is album to start with.
Four Tet should have mentioned him in my last thread as he's pretty well known now. This is amazing electronica out of London. Start off with his most recent, Rounds, but I like Pause better....
Grandaddy Another band that's pretty well known now. Dream/Pych Pop from Califonia. anyone should love this stuff - honest! Start off with The Sophtware Slump
Sparklehorse Hard to put in genre - but there are comparisons to Pixies here. It's an odd mix of Dream/Indie/Noise Indie-Pop... Good Morning Spider is good starting point.
anyone know of these? If not check 'em out and let me know your thoughts!
