From Buzzjack.
Sir Cliff Richard has launched a campaign to make chart history by returning to the number one spot.
The veteran star has had chart-topping hits in five decades, from the 1950s to the 1990s, and now wants six in a row.
A new song, Thank You For A Lifetime, is being released next month to mark the 50th anniversary of his first hit.
He said: "I may be greedy, but to notch up a number one after 50 years would be just fantastic. I've got the song, I can only hope for the support."
Sir Cliff's first UK hit, Move It, reached number two in September 1958.
Living Doll was his first number one the following year, and he has since had 13 further best-sellers. The last was The Millennium Prayer in 1999.
Sir Cliff has had 14 number one singles in total between 1959-1999
Thank You For A Lifetime will be released on 8 September and a message on Sir Cliff's official website urged all fans to buy it.
"With the singles market gradually dying, and changes to singles charts, this could be the last chance for Cliff to achieve his 'sixth decade' ambition," it said.
The single will be backed by a previously "lost" track, Mobile Alabama School Leaving Hullabaloo.
It was recorded in 1977 but Sir Cliff has no recollection of the session. It was mis-filed in the archives and has only just been unearthed.
As well as being the B-side on the single, it will appear on an eight-disc retrospective that is also due out next month.
Sir Cliff is expected to launch a major publicity drive around the releases, with an autobiography to be published at the same time.
Thank You For A Lifetime will be available over the counter only at Woolworths, who have decided to make an exception to their recent decision not to stock singles. It will also be on sale as a download source

Much as I am a massive Cliff fan and would love to see him take the record he has absolutely no mission.
The unfortunate fact of life is that a lot of the types of people who bought his records are just not into downloading and there are just not enough outlets selling physicals to get a resord to #1 on these sales alone. Cliff always sold relatively better in shops like Smiths, Woolies and most of these stores have abandoned the physicals - Woolies just last month. He also gets practically no airplay.
EMI had a last chance for him with 21st Century Christmas but bungled it not getting enogh copies of the single into the shops to meet demand as many stores were sold out by early Friday on the week of release and only starting a massive push in the Wednesday of the week of release instead of in advance. Even so it was the #1 selling physiacl that week.
A major drawback too that the BBC had an embargo on Christmas songs being performed more than a week before Christmas so he wasn't allowed to sing it on Strictly Come Dancing.
As for it only being available at Woolies as an exception all I can ask is "Are they nuts?"

Yet Katie Melua and Eva Cassidy's duet was only sold in Tesco Rub so you never know. I personally can't see him making No.1 though.

Aww this would be great if it happened. I thought Cliff has given up on trying to get another #1 after "21st Century Christmas" though, or was that just the Christmas #1 he gave up on? ;D

Good point, Chris but consider how many people go through the doors of Tesco in any one week compared to Woolies now. It could possibly just reach five figures but that mightn't even make it top 10.

Yeah you're right about Tesco having far far more customers. I won't go in Woolies as it's TOO HOT! They're too tight to consider staff and customers and install air-con.

I think if he gets enough support and promo through his website that he could sell what is needed, if he releases on a quiet week?

Its a big mistake on his record company to make it a Woolies exclusive when they have just given up selling singles
Not a hope

If he made it a limited ed, 50000, might pull a few people in?

I hope he does it, although it's a shame it was exclusive to woolworths.

I really hope it happens for him. To have #1s in so many decades would be a remarkable achievement.

I would so love it to go to No 1 for him. It would be fantastic. I dont hold out any great hopes though I'm afraid - but then again never say never - I will still cross my fingers and hope and buy my copies! Whether he gets another No 1 or not though - what he has achieved in a lifetime has been phenominal ........and it's not over yet! ;D Love Melody xx

It would have to be the week before X-Factor
He has little chance of beating X-factor to Christmas #1. I don't think he will reach #1 in September.
Also if he really wants his single to sell well why are they doing this stupid limited edition nonsense. Probably won't even be on 7-Digital or tunetribe.

Elvis has a 'Christmas Duets' Album out for Christmas and a single will be released from it. The X-factor Winner will have competition!!!

It mentions downloads, so I'm presuming it'll be rolled out to most download sites?

The US tracklisting includes "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with Carrie Underwood "Blue Christmas" with Martina McBride "Here Comes Santa Claus" with LeAnn Rimes "Silent Night" with Sara Evans "Merry Christmas Baby" with Gretchen Wilson "Silver Bells" with Anne Murray "White Christmas" with Amy Grant "O Little Town" with Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town “Santa Claus Is Back In Town” with Wynonna Judd However the UK and Australian versions will include additional/alternative tracks and artists

I should hope so too as that tracklisting, whilst countrytastic, would be lacklustre to us Brits!
