Why do people label stuff like this indie whilst totally ignoring music that really is?

from their website
After originally forming as a side project in 2005, Flobots brought together Emcees Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit with violist Mackenzie Roberts, guitarist Andy Guerrero, bassist Jesse Walker, trumpet player Joe Ferrone, and drummer Kenny Ortiz. By the end of the year, it was clear that the band's refreshingly positive message and nontraditional instrumentation gave it both a universal appeal and a marketable buzz factor. Whether sharing the stage with jam bands, indie rock acts, or hip-hop groups, Flobots connected with audiences and quickly reached a tipping point to became one of Denver's most influential bands.
And people, who ever they are???, dont label this indie it is just the best fit forum for the style of music and attitute of the band. Where would you class Beck for example? as thats the closest comparison Id make to this band.
So this is the best fit forum as we dont have an 'alternative/hiphop/multiinstrumentalist/with indie leanings' forum
I personally think its brilliant, very clever and fooling a lot of narrow/small minded people. You cant judge a band just by one song sometimes not everything fits neat little stereotypes least of all this band. Read about them, watch some live vids on YouTube and even better actually LISTEN to the song!!!!

Well said Thorney, I got the impression it was about not getting involved in stuff above your head, just because you can.

There's an explanation of what the song is about on its Wikipedia page: "The song is about the idea that we have so much incredible potential as human beings to be destructive or to be creative. And it's tragic to me that the appetite for military innovation is endless, but when it comes to taking on a project like ending world hunger, it's seen as outlandish. It's not treated with the same seriousness," - Flobots MC Jonny 5 (a.k.a. Jamie Laurie) said. I should add - I wouldn't really call this Indie, but 'Alternative Rock'. There isn't a more suitable forum here for its discussion.

I thought it was the best forum for it to be discussed, it would get lost in music and not appreciated. Cheers for that kingb.

This is one of the most innovative songs I've heard in a while. Glad to see it's been doing well

This is one of the most innovative songs I've heard in a while. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I don't understand how anyone could consider this song innovative when it sounds like a five year old rap-metal song.

it's ok, considering i'm a narrow-minded snob who doesn't like rap

Well it's "rap" in the sense that it's spoken word. More like Goldie Lookin' Chain style rap though.

On first listen, I thought Eminem had made a comeback.

What happened to my comment that I thought it sounded like Bran Van 3000 or LEN? Did someone delete it? I definitely made it and posted it last night!
