does anyone have a list...
im thinking teenage dirtbag, how you remind me and chasing cars would be pretty high.
weird that even though most drop quite quickly these days, two of the biggest didn't even reach the top 5 (chasing cars and numb/encore)

Hmmm, depends on what you mean by rock. 'Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley was played all the time on XFm and that sold near to a million but using the following link fatherandy2.proboards35.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=chart&thread=32698&page=1 I'd to a top 10 of 1, Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus 2. Rockstar - Nickelback 3. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz 4. How You Remind Me - Nickelback 5. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol 6. The Bad Touch - Bloodhound Gang 7. Christmas Time - Darkness 8. Ruby - Kaiser Chiefs 9. Dancin in the Moonlight - Toploader 10. Bring Me To Life - Evanesence but that wouldn't include James Blunt, Nizopli, Ozzy Osbourne (with Kelly) or The Fray..

I'm not sure Toploader should be on there... but I would probably include Ozzy.

the definition of 'rock' is pretty problematic... what about 'fat lip' - sum 41 (or was that last century?)
if by 'rock' you include 'indie' then we could add 'somebody told me', 'take me out', etc
this is all based on my conception of a song's popularity - not always reflected in sales i guess

mad world is crap. according to wikipedia (always reliable):
darkness- xmas time 315,000 (15k more than evanescence) at end of 2003 i believe in a thing called love 165,000 at end of '03
also, sex on fire has sold 320k already.

You wouldn't count Rollin' by Limp Bizkit then? It's crap but it was #1 for 2 weeks in 2001.

and is madworld not rock/alternateive? How is a guy singing along to another guy playing a Tears For Fears song on a piano "rock"? Limp Bizkit and Sum 41 should probably be on there. Gorillaz and Toploader probably shouldn't. As has been mentioned, whether the vast majority of songs mentioned should even be considered depends on your definition of rock.

Sum 41 and Limp Bizkit aren't included because they haven't sold as much as 'Bring Me To Life'....

Why on earth would Sum 41 be in this list? It wasn't even THAT big a hit - not even top 5 I think, average chart run. Am I missing something???

Fat Lip was a number 8 hit in 2001. it stayed in the top 75 for 9 weeks, two less than the number 13 follow-up In Too Deep. i'm guessing both sold around 100k, which is nowhere near the figures we're talking about.
using that link, my top 15 would be:
wheatus- teenage dirtbag nickelback- rock star nickelback- how you remind me snow patrol- chasing cars the darkness- christmas time kaiser chiefs- ruby the fray- how to save a life kings of leon- sex on fire evanescence- bring me to life jay-z/linkin park- numb/encore arctic monkeys- dancefloor limp bizkit- rollin' oasis- go let it out razorlight- america alien ant farm- smooth criminal
15 rock singles in the top 200= not good.
a few bands whose comebacks might make the list in the next year:
u2 (biggest band on the planet) green day (biggest comeback this century after american idiot) the killers (human will sell buckets) linkin park (what i've done underperformed)
and ... the beatles. when the back catalogue becomes available on itunes, it is possible that the entire top 10 will consist of their songs. maybe.

'Sex On Fire' too... It's already sold well over 300k. I'd expect it to end the decade atleast ahead of ;How You Remind Me'.

While not quite rock songs I think that Gorillaz, Toploader & Blood Hound Gang could qualify under "rock" as they are associated with rock/indie/alternative music... Then again it depends on what you define as rock music!

They had someone from Toploader on TV yesterday on the program of the songs you love to hate. He seemed to think that Dancing In The Moonlight actually destroyed the band, and every time they played it it was another nail in the coffin for his band.
Although Achilles Heel was also a top 10 hit, DITM was the only one anyone knew and he said kids came to their gigs and were disappointed because most of their music didn't sound like that. By the way I saw them live in 1999 at Camden Barfly and to play there they were definitely an indie-rock band. Achilles Heel was the first single of theirs I knew (it came out a year before it was a hit) and Let The People Know was the follow-up and in my chart at the time I saw them live (and was their biggest NM hit peaking at #3).
I think he was partly disappointed with the success of Dancing In The Moonlight because it was a cover and they wrote most of their own stuff and would probably want to be remembered for the music they wrote themselves.

Then again it depends on what you define as rock music! There's a difference between "rock" and "indie". Broadly speaking: "Rock" is something you could mosh or headbang to, "Indie" is boys/girls with guitars, "Electro" is boys/girls with keyboards, and "IndiElectronica" is a poster on Haven.

Yeah, but generally speaking, most indie & alternative music could qualify as rock, although this would not apply to Gorillaz, though I have not heard of those other two bands.
