So Alexandra won XFactor yesterday and her version is gonna be the Xmas number one... Course Leonard Cohen did the original but it's the Jeff Buckley version that gets all the praise. Lots of artists have covered it from Rufus Wainwright to Damien Rice to Bono... to JLS Thank god Eggnog was voted off and we were spared to hear his version So what's your fav version of the song? Mine is Damien Rice's. He always used a bit of the song as a medley at the end of his own Cold Water song, but this year he did the whole song at Cohen's introduction to the Hall of Fame, and I think it's the bestest cos it's got such emotion!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaHdeNN_ee0

Amy Macdonald has been doing a version on her current tour this year as well...what's happened this year to make it so popular?? Have to say I can't stand the Leonard Cohen version...Just seems sooo heavy lol. I thought Rufus Wainwright had it first, obviously hearing that from the Shrek OST but obviously proved wrong...
As for Alexandra's version.....hmmm....not liking it either, there's something about it that I can't put my finger on....and as you say, it will be christmas no one, so don't bother buying anything else.
Probably one f the easiest songs to play on the guitar too

It was Rufus Wainwright's version that was used in Shrek!
I don't think you can beat Jeff Buckley's TBH!

It was Rufus Wainwright's version that was used in Shrek! I don't think you can beat Jeff Buckley's TBH! I have it on good authority that it was John Cale's but if you know best then fine. Seems we're both right. John Cale's version in the film and Rufus' version on the soundtrack album . Wonder why that was. From Wiki: "Cale says he "went through and just picked out the cheeky verses." His version was featured in the 1996 film, Basquiat, as well as the 2001 animated film, Shrek. Rufus Wainwright covered the song as well, and his version appears on that film's soundtrack album rather than Cale's."

Well I've never seen Shrek but as Rufus Wainwright's version is on the soundtrack I assume it's his version that's used...

Jeff Buckley's version is growing on me, and I have to say I like JLS' version as well, but not the version by Alex, Damien Rice does it well also, I knew a girl who was big into Leonard Cohen! Not heard his version, maybe we can youtube link to the versions available? Shrek one is good though. And this answers the Shrek query. You are both right It is Cale who sang the FILM version but it was Wainwright who did the version on the CD because Cale was with another music label.

According to Buzzjack posters, Jeff's version is now No.7 on I-Tunes and should be top 10 next Sunday with Alexandra at No.1. Leonard Coen's version is also climbing I-Tunes so could be top 40 too. What will Fearne say to 2 or 3 versions charting? Yeah, on digging further I read that John Cale's record label wouldn't allow his version to be licensed for the soundtrack CD so they used Rufus' version instead.

the funny thing is that my least favourite version is... the original by Leonard Cohen!!
I think it's the backing vocals that ruin it for me...
^EDIT EDIT just remember the other day I heard Il Divo's own interpretation... that was the WORST. Period.

Jeff Buckley's version is my favourite, by some considerable margin.

I've listened to a few versions over the weekend. The Buckley version is my favourite with the Damien Rice and Rufus Wainwright versions also very good.

Jeff Buckley's version is my favourite song of all time. Just a beautiful interpretation of a beautiful lyric.
I like most versions to be honest... it's just a good song, so even the emotionally drained versions like the X-Factor ones are still listenable.
