I mean her first 2 albums were released on a major record label, where do you think Toy would be now if they'd been huge hits?
I'm not just saying this to be pretentious, but part of me thinks I wouldn't be as much of a fan if she was some massive star. I personally think her music would've suffered. Yes, she would've had more polished-sounding songs and high production videos, but I think her music would be so much more generic.
This occured to me when I was listening to Just Wanna Dance earlier... do you really think a major label would allow a song with such unconventional lyrics to be released? No! They'd tell her to record something more sensible that will appeal to the mass-market. Part of the reason I love Toy is her sense of humour which comes across in some of her songs. Her failures (sales-wise) have also forced her to try so many different genres, giving us an extremely varied collection of music over the years, with everything from R&B to Hip! House to Country being covered.
It's great being a Toy fan, because if any other artist has a flop album you rarely hear from them again, but Toy just carries on and on. So in that sense we needn't worry too much about sales figures and the like. She'll always be number 1 in our hearts. ;D

i agree with u but i think polydor counts as a major label! I think if promoted a bit more her first 2 albums could have been big, not huge just a few million. I think HDL would have made her more popular but not sold as much (like britneys ITZ ended her us radio boycott but didnt sell as much as her previous albums). Imagination would be her critically acclaimed album and sold quite a bit, it def deserved to. I think even if properly promoted NR onwards she would have flopped. I admire it how every single album shes recorded has lost money yet she continues.

She would be singing bland, generic rnb songs now!

I agree. Regardless of what you may think of Toy and her music, the sheer fact that she hasn't thrown her hands in the air and refused to do music after all the adversity she's faced shows real strength of character. The fact is that she doesn't HAVE to do any work, she doesn't need to make money for herself, she just loves doing it. She attacks every new album she takes on with sheer enthusiasm, and that's what shines through and makes it really enjoyable music.
