I'm talking about sales of CD albums in stores and online. Someone on Buzzjack says that it's HMV and that Amazon sales are only a small percentage. Well what about Tesco, Asda and all the other supermarkets, Morrisons, Sainsbury's etc, combined? Do they outsell HMV? Does HMV online sell more than Amazon or Play then? Interested if anyone knows.

Can't answer your question as i personally don't know. I miss Woolies! Used to get some great offers there. I always use HMV.com, sometimes Play and supermarkets when there's very good deals (e.g.- Leona for £6 and Take That for under that last year at Asda). I'd guess it's now HMV, the downfall of Woolies and Zavvi must have been phenomenal for them.

Thanks for all the replies guys. What's with the arsey sarcasm? Perhaps people just don't know and aren't going to waste a post saying as such?

Without doubt, the supermarkets are now the biggest retailer.

Without doubt, the supermarkets are now the biggest retailer. That's what I thought but am reliably informed again today that it's definitely HMV. People have no sense paying higher prices there!

I would have thought it was HMV too, i don't consider supermarkets as proper music retailers, they're just supermarkets that sell cds. HMV is a proper music store and quite big, where as supermarkets only have a small section of chart titles...and some bargain bin stuff.

The supermarkets may well be the market leaders for chart albums but that doesn't necessarily mean they lead the way in overall sales.

I would have thought the supermarkets too, but after looking at the albums in Tesco's and Sainsbury's last week i was shocked to see how much they had cut back. They used to do the Top 100 but now they barely do the Top 40, and unless i missed it didn't notice the SuBo album anywhere (this in week of release). So unless everyone's buying online, and i know people that do, it must be HMV. I was pleasantly surprised by how busy it was when i last went in there a couple of months ago. And as for the higher prices, you sound like my dad! I've generally got albums in the supermarkets recently, but thats basically because they're closer to me than the two HMVs in the area, Canterbury and Thanet. HMV has far more choice, the stuff i bought in HMV last time were things i couldnt buy anywhere else (well definitely one which was an MJ DVD for a friend's birthday anyway, just bought the other stuff there too) and trust me i had tried elsewhere!

I still think that HMV will easily be the biggest music retailer. But add the supermarkets together and they probably sell more... And their prices aren't that high. I've bought the majority of my cd's from HMV this year at an average of about £8!

People have no sense paying higher prices there! morrisons don't seem to have any deals for albums so i don't see the point in walking 15 mins just for a cd (also you don't know the prices of the cds until you get there and if you phone up they can't be bothered finding out for you even though the phones are right next to the entertainment section). Tesco's it is 2 buses ride away (1 of the bus doesn't have a good service so you stood there in the cold waiting ages for it). Asda we don't have one in our town which means it is 2 bus rides away (which takes ages) At least with hmv it is right inside the shopping centre, if you can't find a cd normaly someone will help you find it plus it is just a quick bus ride away. I would say i do have sense going to Hmv.
