Inspired by a similar thread on another forum - which bands or artists do you absolutely love to bits, but when you mention them to other people, they never have a clue who they are? And how did you discover these acts? Links to websites or videos of the artists are also very welcome. Mine are A Silent Film and Sarah Whatmore. Both of whom, in my opinion, have delivered BRILLIANT albums in the last 18 months that were criminally ignored. A Silent Film are a superb indie band; think the strong melodies of Coldplay or Keane with occasional hints of Muse, and you're getting there, however they do have their own unqiue sound and are far more than just a copy of other more succesful bands. I saw them support OneRepublic last year and instantly loved them! I think their debut album 'The City That Sleeps' is available at a reduced price right now. Sarah Whatmore was a contestant on the original series of Pop Idol but has since rejected the pop/dance direction of her early singles, and has gone on to make a beautiful album of more original songs - on the whole her album is mellow pop, not too far removed from the likes of Dido, James Blunt or David Gray. I first heard her latest material at a free show at Blackpool and bought the album 'Time To Think' which IMO is better than the singles! LAURA CANTRELL. She's a country singer and was championed in the UK by John Peel. Her debut album Not The Tremblin' Kind was said by him to be "my favourite album of this decade if not all time" Several of her tracks were in his Festive 50. I didn't discover her through him though. I was in HMV in the country music section and that album was playing. I thought "wow" and asked at the counter who it was and bought it there and then! Her other albums are When The Roses Bloom Again and Humming By The Flowered Vine. She does old-fashioned country with the twangy steel-guitar.

Practically all of them...dammit, I mentioned the KLF today to a room full of students and hardly any of them knew who I was talking about. OK, here's a few: Bachelorette - New Zealand multi-instrumentalist Bearsuit - Norfolkers Manhattan Love Suicides - back to blonde They might have split up, though, there are two spin-off bands - The Blanche Hudson Weekend and The Medusa Snare - which double the sonic fun. Slow Down Tallahassee - Sheffield popsteel How do I find them? I get an email from Rounder Records (subscribe here) with annotated album releases and I google the interesting sounding ones. Plus looking at recommendations from emusic or last.fm. And the Guardian's New Band section is worth a look. No point whatsoever relying on mainstream media. All they ever play is total and utter sh*t.

Powderfinger, I'll pop up some youtube links to my fave songs later. I was amazed to discover them on the new releases section of virgin on demand! Also Ferne Cotton is a fan, how random! Great thread by the way!

I will do a "chart check" on them in a moment. I have a song by Silent Film Project too, I assume that is a different band. From Sarah Whatmore I have Automatic (2003) and Undefined (2009). My chart search has revealed: The Lamplight: 12th bubbler Sleeping Pills: 3rd bubbler You Will Leave A Mark: 6th bubbler Thirteen Times The Strength: finally a hit for them on the NM chart, peaked at #15, stayed in the chart 6 weeks. For Sarah Whatmore I have Undefined as the 3rd bubbler on 21 March 2009 and no listing at all for Automatic.

I think most of my fav artists are pretty unknown (William Fitsimmons, Rachael Yamagata, Lisa Hannigan, Angus & Julia Stone, Alexi Murdoch, David Ford,...) and even my favourites that are relatively popular (Damien Rice, Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Ray Lamontagne, Tori Amos, Antony & The Johnsons, Nerina Pallot) are not known by your average music buyer...

One of my favourite bands is an old one.
They are called 1927.
1927 was an Australian pop/rock band formed in Melbourne in 1987 with James Barton on drums, Bill Frost on bass guitar, his brother Garry Frost on guitar and keyboards, and Eric Weideman on vocals, guitar and keyboards.[ They were popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their major hit songs "If I Could", "Compulsory Hero" and "That's When I Think of You" and their multi-platinum #1 album ...ish.[Weideman had been seen by Garry Frost (ex-Moving Pictures) on a "Red Faces" talent segment of variety TV show Hey Hey It's Saturday.

I guess I don't count as your average music buyer then, as I've heard of nearly all of them! And I've actually seen David Ford live - he was supporting Starsailor back in 2005, and he was pretty damn good! He was the singer in Easyworld, right?

If you like 1927 you probably like one my favourite old bands ,the canadian rock group Glass Tiger, only 2 top 40 hits in the UK but a string of great albums and the Scottish lead singer is still making great solo records today.

Co-incidentally I've actually them both live though!! SFP didn't impress me that much though; they were supporting an Arctic Monkeys tribute band actually! Oh and crazytowel - 1 of Ben's Brother actually co-wrote some of Sarah Whatmore's debut album which I mentioned in my list. Another co-incidence! Another act who I never understood why they're not bigger, they even get decent airplay.

Taylor Dayne isn't an unknown artist! She had a top 10 hit in 1988.
Maria Lawson is reasonably well known too.
I do like Remi Nicole too. She should have been huge in 2007 but had just one minor hit with Go Mr Sunshine.
Who mentioned Ben's Brother? Of course they did have a top 20 album and scraped a top 40 single too, but Rise was my #1 of 2007 and will almost certainly be in my top 10 of the 00s, possibly in 5th or 6th place.
