With Christmas on its way it usually means several Christmas song releases and usually fewer of anything else. The playlists are getting slightly smaller, actually, but are still big enough - over 40 - and it's still significant the kind of things that are missing out on the chart. We'll see how it picks up after Christmas this week (and the week between Christmas and New Year). Actually, in the last few years it's been then I've needed new releases most desperately to get rid of all the Christmas songs. So far only two Christmas songs in the chart, although one of them is the highest new entry this week. A couple of new ones on the coming playlist.

All the songs you have picked to enter this week are better than Mumford & Sons - Winter winds ?? I just can't believe that. I can just about handle you not chartinG Yeasayer even though it is one of teh catchiest indie tunes thsi month but this,,,
I am dumbstruck.
Sometimes I think you are just contrary.
I have only heard 4 of your entries maybe I have everything completely wrong, maybe there is loads of brilliant music every week that you and maybe a few others discover every week and the rest of us lap up our spoon fed inferior music. Maybe I should give up.
Sorry but I feel frustrated I must listen to around 30 new tracks every week and a few albums and every week you fill your chart with twenty odd songs and I only know 4 or 5. I thought this would get better in the digital age but it hasn't. I really would like your playlist beacuse by the time you put your chart up its a bit late to chart most of them and they dont do well for me.

I don't like 'Winter Winds' either. I want some degree of enthusiasm in my Christmas songs! This is slow and plodding.

There may be a physical next week. The download is already available, with the whole EP for just 99p on play.com. I am generally preferring Christmas Thanks For Nothing to the other track. Thorney: I thought you might have wanted the Bouncing Souls one although I'm not sure you've collected any of the others. I get them from the record company's own site at www.chunksaah.com, they are 99c with paypal which is about 62p at the moment.

Well I didn't post the playlist but then nobody replied so presumably nobody was that interested in it...
Anyway, here, just out of interest, was the NM chart of 3 April 1993, the week that Rage Against The Machine peaked. It was a top 20 and had quite a "heavy" flavour to it overall in the top part:
1 (1) Fear Of The Dark - Iron Maiden <3rd of 4 weeks at #1> 2 (3) Young At Heart - Bluebells (Only week at #2: also a #3 in 1984) 3 (2) Cats In The Cradle - Ugly Kid Joe (#2[1]) 4 (4) Are You Gonna Go My Way - Lenny Kravitz (#2[1]) 5 (6) Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine 6 (7) Shortsharpshock EP - Therapy? (lead track Screamager, actually the only track I ever played off it) 7 (5) The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite - REM (#1[4]) 8 (--) Is It Like Today - World Party (#5) 9 (12) Jump He Said - David Bowie 10 (-- ) Come Undone - Duran Duran (#1[3]) 11 (16) Can't Do Anything To Stop Me - Chris Isaak 12 (18) Go Away - Gloria Estefan 13 (19) Peace In Our Time - Cliff Richard 14 (9) Oh Carolina - Shaggy (#9) 15 (8) Give In To Me - Michael Jackson (#3) 16 (17) Jamaican In New York - Shinehead 17 (11) Mr Loverman - Shabba Ranks (#11) 18 (18) Informer - Snow 19 (--) Copacabana (At The Copa ) - Barry Manilow (#10) 20 (13) Too Young To Die - Jamiroquai (#13)
At the time the chart was chart-only based. The songs by Bluebells and Barry Manilow were re-issues of old songs, Shabba Ranks was also a re-issue but only about a year old.
The UK chart was heavily reggae-based at the time. A fair amount of that is in the lower end of this chart but the upper-end is far more heavy-rock based.

I like this time of year because people release catchy throwaway pop and I can happily chart it.

19 December was also the last day of Chanukah, in fact this was the chart that covers the whole week of Chanukah so not surprising really that Shwa Losben remained at #1, but this could now start falling fast as the festival is over, as will the Christmas ones a week or so after it. Ray Davies may well get to #1 and might stay there a 2nd week. Bryan White's song is a bit novelty but not actually Christmas related so could well be #1 the week after.
I do have a playlist of 36 this week (2 by the same artist so technically 35), and no Christmas songs on it.
There are other songs in the chart with a winter theme but not technically Christmas (Camera Obscura / Laura Marling). Those might hang around a bit.
No Joe McElderry nor Rage Against The Machine (the latter was not eligible due to it being a re-issue. See the post above this one). A different X-Factor contestant has charted though, back from 2006 (the year Leona won) - The MacDonald Bros with their Christmas song. Journey South also had a single out but was considered ineligible because it was a track from an album over 2 years old. (Similarly the Pet Shop Boys whose track was 12 years old).
The Wurzels never have actually reached my chart previously: My chart only started in 1977, one year too late for Combine Harvester, and the re-issue didn't chart in 2001 (although it was on my playlist). I did like the original at the time it came out - as an 11-year old I thought it was very funny actually. Originally the Wurzels did make totally original music, led by Adge Cutler who was their main songwriter but he died in a car accident in 1974, and they made the parody singles in a time when they were stuck for new material. Their most famous original song was called Drink Up Thy Zider, and you can find a version of it on youtube.

No surprise to see Shwa Losben remaining at #1, and lots of Christmas/winter songs riding high. Particularly pleased to see Shooting Stars and Laura Marling (although the latter is a bit low) charting. No muppets?

I think you'd like the Whitman ones.
Idle Hands are one-hit wonders in my chart with Loaded being the #1 single of the year in 2006 on points but they haven't had another hit yet. This is their first single since then. It isn't anywhere near as good but it might get in the chart.

I have created a new facebook group Get Real Music Back Into The ChartsNot everyone who reads this is in my friends list at facebook so you might not have seen me create it in my status. I am hoping it can grow big, maybe not as big as that RATM one but big enough to make a difference. I'd be happy if I can get something really good even to #33 in the chart.

I' waiting to see what your nomination will be but I'm sure they will be obscure generic no-hopers peddling an unfashionable and unoriginal sound with no style or personality what so ever but their song sounds quite pleasant and nice, maybe even funny.
I hope i'm wrong though.
Personally I am going the other way, if you don't embrace the charts you are old fashioned and irrelevant and there is always good stuff there as well as bad. I am making an effort to give as many chart hits attention as possible and not writing them off.
The only things I dont like about the chart at the moment is they are a bit 2 slow and there are too many entries by the same artists or oldies.
You like what you like and I like what I like why force it down anyone elses throat as tbh we are the minority!

Yes I'm sure that Susan Boyle, number one in the album chart right now is "modern" and "relevant" to the current music scene. And Michael Buble... And of course in the singles chart that RATM song is so 2010s... (given it was from the early 90s). Lady GaGa is so "relevant" sounding just like what Gwen Stefani was doing 7 years earlier, even with a bit of Boney M mixed into one of her songs.
Music doesn't normally leap though, it progresses gradually and circulates somewhat. So acts will borrow from what was there in the past but add their own new touch to it.
I'm planing to try to promote multiple genres, not just indie-pop-rock, what you probably think is old-fashioned. My first two acts I promoted are a Texan rock-group called Whitman and a German ska-band called Blue Babies. I'll hopefully promote some British acts too.

Yes but it is pop music id rather Michael Buble over a no hit wonder. Michael Buble is relevant as he is pop = popular music. Susan Boyle is relevant as she won Britain Got Talent, yes she does covers but it is popular.
You need more than just a nice song, tell me why Whitman are great. Do they have a charismatic lead singer, do they have legions of live fans who follow them everywhere. Do they have a unique feature that makes them stand out?
If you dont have one of these you have no hope unless you feature in an advert, film or spammed across the blogosphere or supported by a fan in the media.
Tell me why I should love Whitman because I can tell you why I love Hurts, The Drums or Yeasayer all debut artists in my top 10 but I know that maybe only one of these bands will cross over or none of them. Who cares I love them!!
