I remember 1988 as being the year of the female solo singer (don’t think we referred to them as divas then though?)
I guess Madonna had been the real trailblazer, and funny that 1988 happened to be her “gap-year”, allowing them all to come out of the woodwork!
One of my favourites in this and over the subsequent few years was the exotically named Taylor Dayne (or so it seemed to me at the time – seems like everybody’s called Taylor these days!)
Got a few of her albums, the first two were classics. Haven’t heard any new stuff from her in ten or fifteen years though. Anybody know what she's up to? Just googled her, she looks like she's been quite friendly with a plastic surgeon or two over the years...
Not exactly a stereotypical pop princess, I always thought she looked (and sounded) a bit like a bloke. Big voice and big hair to match, she could always be relied on to belt out a big tune.
TELL IT TO MY HEART
Tell It To My Heart – The title track was a massive pop/dance record. Love the bit in the song where it goes quiet towards the end and then comes back with a massive beat. Absolutely brilliant, still love this. I think Kelly Llorena did a cover of this a few years ago and totally killed it – this song is untouchable imo. First single release, got to number 3 in January 1988, 11/10
In The Darkness – Catchy pop song, 8/10
Don’t Rush Me – Fourth single off the album, flopped over here, but I think this was a big US hit (remember it on America’s Top Ten!) I quite like it, but thought it an odd choice for a single, really surprised it did so well in America, 7/10
I’ll Always Love You – Third single off the album, can’t believe this never made the Top 40 here! Proof that Taylor’s voice is versatile enough to not just sing the big dance numbers. Classy ballad. US number one? 9/10
Prove Your Love – Another massive pop/dance crossover song. I can’t choose a winner between this and TITMH. Peaked at a shockingly low number 8 over here. 11/10
Do You Want It Right Now – This should have been released as a single, I reckon a strong club remix or, dare I say a PWL makeover, would have made this as big as TITMH or Prove Your Love. Think this got released as a single years later by Degrees of Motion (??) 9/10
Carry Your Heart – You carry your heart, no-one can hold all of that weight on their shoulders.... Love this song, 9/10
Want Ads – A bit cheesy, but a brilliant pop song, 9/10
Where Does That Boy Hang Out? - The weakest song on the album. OK-ish, 6/10
Upon The Journey’s End – A great finish to the album, 9/10
AVERAGE RATING: 88%
