I've noticed the singles chart has been quite cosmopolitan in recent weeks with a number of different nationalities.
Does anyone have any idea what the record is for the most nationalities in the top 40 at any one time?
Also I wonder how many different countries have been represented in the UK chart...?

I was thinking we could make a list of the biggest selling single in the UK by each nation. Not sure where you would put Boney M in nationality. Also whether "You're The One That I Want" would count as a biggest hit by a US artist (if I Just Called To Say I Love You hasn't outsold it) and similarly whether that track might count for Australia (if you consider Olivia Newton John as part-Australian).

If the nationality is part of the act, then I would count it, unless you have a separate list for multi-national acts.

Would you count Band Aid though? Obviously one of the biggest selling singles and contains UK and Irish members (not sure if it contained any Americans) but I wouldn't classify it as the biggest selling single by an Irish act even though Bob Geldof who was Irish co-wrote it (and Bono also vocalised on it).

Jody Watley and Robert Bell from Kool & The Gang were definitely on it.

But Band Aid isn't an act in its own right. It's a collective of other acts who came together to record a one-off (at the time) charity single. So I would ignore it but maybe add a footnote.

Why not use the rule "act must be 100% single nationality for its entire life", to overcome the confusion ? Then a series of footnotes could be added, recording BandAid as part Irish, part American, for example.

Or split combinations up separately.
So INXS would be Australia, but the New Seekers would be Sri Lanka/Australia, AC/DC UK/Australia and so on.
That way, UK/Australia would have as part of it AC/DC and Olivia Newton-John, UK/Australia/US Travolta & ON-J...

Enough talking, time for some action.
Some easy ones, to start the list off. I've ignored multiple nationality acts (e.g. Band Aid, JT & ON-J, Boney M, Aqua, Abba...) completely. Others can re-insert them later, if desired.
1. UK --- Elton John = Candle In The Wind 2. USA --- Stevie Wonder = I Just Called To Say I Love You 3. CANADA --- Bryan Adams = Everything I Do, I Do It For You 4. AUSTRALIA --- Seekers = Carnival Is Over 5. JAMAICA --- Shaggy = It Wasn't Me 6. DENMARK --- Whigfield = Saturday Night 7. IRELAND --- Boyzone = No Matter What 8. ITALY --- Eiffel 65 = Blue (Da Ba Di) 9. NETHERLANDS --- Pussycat = Mississippi 10. AUSTRIA --- Anton Karas = Harry Lime Theme 11. SPAIN --- Enrique Iglesias = Hero 12. GERMANY --- ATB = 9pm (Til I Come) 13. PUERTO RICO --- Ricky Martin = Livin' La Vida Loca ?? is this an independent country ?? 14. GUYANA --- Eddy Grant = I Don't Wanna Dance 15. NORWAY --- A-Ha = Take On Me 16. BAHAMAS --- Baha Men = Who Let The Dogs Out 17. FRANCE --- Ottawan = DISCO 18. SWEDEN --- Rednex = Cotton Eye Joe 19. COLOMBIA --- Shakira = Whenever, Wherever 20. GREECE --- Demis Roussos = The Roussos Phenomenon
Some notable countries not yet on the list:- New Zealand, Belgium, Russia, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil...
I may have missed some acts from the Caribbean or Africa, having incorrectly assumed they are British or American or French.
Can we expand this to a Top 40 ?

What would be the most obscure? K'naan must be the first Somalian in the charts, there's Burundi Steiphenson Black from Burundi/France, I think some of the Goombay Dance Band were from Guadeloupe, Montserrat have number one representation via Boney M, have any popes made the chart?

also:
SOUTH AFRICA ... Clout = Substitute
also depends as to whether you count Billy Ocean as UK or Trindad & Tobago. If the latter then:
TRINIDAD & TOBAGO ... Billy Ocean - When The Going Gets Tough

13. PUERTO RICO --- Ricky Martin = Livin' La Vida Loca ?? is this an independent country ?? Strictly speaking, no but I'm happy to consider them as separate for the purposes of this list.

There seems to be some confusion over where Iyaz is from. I've seen him billed as being from both the British and US Virgin Islands...
