Enjoyed 1975 this week although the version played of Juxe Box Jive by Rubettes wasn't the original. Very close but I could tell!!

I always suspected that Jimmy Saville's Radio 1 Sunday lunchtime shows were voicetracked, as far back as the late 70's, and certainly not live. I don't think Saville ever had any interest in the music. Jimmy's shows were not voicetracked, but many were pre-recorded as live. To enthusiase the point, Jimmy had some 12 million listeners every week & it wasn't just about the music. The programme was put together as a "Club feel" until 1982. It had a whole host of people involved with it. The stories of Jimmy, the chatter with the production team, the jokes & fun made it a family affair every Sunday & no other Sunday lunchtime show, has ever had so many listeners. It was destroyed by the bosses at Radio One, from 1985-87 with the same years going round & round. Hence Jimmy quitting 23 years ago this very week. I was very annoyed when they changed the format, as I started recording the sequence on 6 February 1983 and so would have done a complete cycle by February 1986 as the cycle was 3 years. Doing this I got pretty much every top 10 hit, not just the ones they normally play, as in the second half they would play the songs that were outside the top 10, what he called "the safety net". Also got to hear some incredibly little known songs that got nowhere near the top 10. I was particularly attentive to the songs from the first year I was recording. Thus songs from 1961, 1964 and 1967 in particular are more in my memory than the other years from the 1960s. Oldies shows now are boring and all play the same songs. You wouldn't, for example, hear them play "Bangers And Mash" by Peter Sellers & Sophia Loren. Jimmy Savile played it, on the first week I recorded, i.e. on 6th February 1983. I once went to one of Jimmy Savile's "on the road" oldies shows at Stoke Mandeville hospital. The only thing about the format the way it was and the way things are now is that we would need a much longer show now as there is far more history (22 years ago now is as recent as 1989), and songs got generally longer and disappeared from the chart quicker, so a show that covers them all is impossible. In fact even when it got into the 70s more songs got missed out.

If Tony Blackburn is joining Radio 2, those who listen to that station can look forward to hearing a lot more Cliff Richard songs then
