More than 20,000 people have backed a campaign to get a recording of four and a half minutes of silence to top the charts this Christmas.
Supporters have signed up on Facebook to back Cage Against The Machine which aims to put avant-garde composer John Cage's silent work 4'33" in the top spot.
A similar internet campaign last year saw Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name beat 2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry's song The Climb to the Christmas number one.

IF - this 'campaign' succeeds, it will be 100% pointless.
DJ's etc. will not play the 'silent track' on the Radio. Nor will it even be played if it were at No.1.
Instead, the Christmas Chart will stop when the No.2 Hit is played. The No.1 will be mentioned - but, then 100% ignored.
So, it may as well not be No.1 at all.
If an 'X Factor' Track is at No.2 - then that will be the final Hit played in the Christmas Chart - which means it is being treated as if it were at No.1.
So, the entire idea of a 'silent track' at No.1 is 100% stupid, pointless, & only a reflection on how dumb the people are who thought of the idea. And I say that as someone who hates 'X Factor. But, I hate this idea even more.

This is such a stupid idea. Who looks more of an idiot? The person who pays for the winner's single from the X Factor or the pratt who pays for 4:33 of silence because a Facebook group told them to.

Why would anyone support this campaign? They would be better off not buying any track and listening to that. Complete idiots.

Radio stations can't play it as it would trigger their emergency tape which comes in after a certain period of total silence.

But its not silence, you can hear coughing; the odd moving about and other odd noises.
Anyway, I will throw my support into buying the Emma's Imagination "debut major label" single that will be released in the Christmas week via her signing to Gary Barlow's Universal label Future Records.
A much more worthwhile protest single; as the brilliant Sky 1's Must Be The Music music talent show was everything The X-Factor SHOULD be. = All about finding original talent making original music/compositions.

I thought this was going to be Alexandra Burkes 'Silence' song. This is just stupid, I understand people rebelling against X-Factor, but atleast pick a song that would be good as a christmas #1, it's just going to make the top 2 tracks rubbish instead of just the #1. Pick a chistmassy song, or a newish song released in the last few months... or even any good song since the charts began, but seriouslt silence with coughs and splutters? No thanks. I thought these campaigns were because people thought X-Factor was ruining the charts... this is abit hypercritical don't cha think?

How do they get so many people to join these campaigns? I can't get people to join mine. I still only have 250 members.

I won't be buying this - I supported the Rage campaign last year (and actually downloaded the track) as that actually made sense. This seems like a total waste of money IMO.
The point has already been proven!! Move on.

What a stupid idea. I mean, I'm all for the latest X-Factor product being held off the top spot, but not by this.

It looks like Cage Against The Machine for Xmas #1 is off, not least due to a reworking of sorts of 4'33" www.facebook.com/poppysingle2010 being released for the Royal British Legion. Funds raised will support serving and ex-serving troops and their families. Short excerpt clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJOI5ZPOU5cIt is out November 7th with the aim of trying to get Number 1 for Remembrance Sunday, the same day as The X-Factor Finalists cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" with profits going to the Help The Heroes campaign Charity for the wounded in Britain's current conflicts. Funny thing is, a certain David Bowie now has a link to support the Royal British Legion "Two Minute Silence" charity record; and not for the Murdoch/Cowell supported Help For Heroes charity single of his own composition which says something. So getting back to the track to take on The X-Factor for Christmas #1 ........ well some of you might not be aware ......... that ........There seems to be an absence of a certain ornithological piece... A headline regarding mass awareness of a certain avian variety... Oh, have you not heard? It was of my understanding that everyone had heard... The Bird Is The Word ..... yes a campaign to get a song that peaked at #4 in the USA in 1963 SURFIN' BIRD by THE TRASHMEN to Christmas no.1. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZThquH5t0owOH, WELL OH, BIRD BIRD BIRD, B-BIRDS THE WORD ....

No chance this year - 4'33 is just stupid and I can't see people coming together on something else now.
ETA: That bird song is pretty horrible too

Glad that campaign is off...
I propose "Spokesman" by Goldfinger. It was my Christmas #1 in 2002 - the year the UK battle was between Girls Aloud and One True Voice... It kind of makes the ponit, they are a bit like Green Day, would probably be appealing enough. And in particular, the lyrics pretty much speak out against what the X-Factor stands for. The only downside is that it is an old song.
