Does anybody else feel the charts are just too r and b heavy and have been for too long? The r and b that is on offer does not even have the charm of the old style r and b, like Mark Morrison, En Vogue or even Destiny's Child. I am not sure how many more records I can stomach with lyrics about 'partying all night' and 'putting your hands in the air' and having some singback 'uh-oh, uhh oh' section. Elton was in the news this week suggesting sonwriters these days lack the imagination of yesteryear's writers. In the r and b canon this is quite true. Taio Cruz feat Ne Yo, Flo Rida, Roll Deep, N Dubz, Tinchy Strider and Will I am...probably co produced by David Guetta. When I heard the latest Hurts single, 'Stay' I was struck by what the charts is lacking...inventive new music. It is such a shame that there is not more music like this breaking through and replenishing what I feel is a very stale and uninspired r and b heavy market. There are exceptions to the rule, I think the Bruno Mars song is a really neat bit of songwriting and also boasts a very strong melody...but there are certain people, who are just emulating the next person and regurgitating insipid and very very samey r and b. Thoughts?

The album charts aren't. That's where the real music is. Single downloads are not bought by music lovers. Only by pre-teens. Yes, that's a snobbish generalization. But I bet I'm more right than wrong.

RnB? What people like Usher, Taio, BEPs etc are doing is PURE POP in my opinion, not RnB anymore Agree that the singles chart has hit a bottom, all hits seem to stick to the same formula, song written by Taio, produced by Guetta and featuring Pitbull and Flo Rida

Ah yes Pitbull ranks as a pet hate of mine! And the songs are all so formulaic aren't they?!

But I bet I'm more right than wrong. Live is where all the real music is. Recorded music, whether released as single tracks on download sites or in big packages, varies in stature. Not saying all live music is good. The vast majority of "indie" acts are just wannabes who pick up guitars and play lots of riffs with no substance. The problem is that nowadays they all release independently and I have to sift through all that stuff listening to it to find the few gems.
