Why blame the supermarkets? HMV should reduce their prices. Simple as that. If they did that they wouldn't make enough money to stay afloat anyway. They have nothing else to fall back on like Tesco or Asda do. I wouldn't be surprised if Asda was making a loss or just barely breaking even in terms of CD sales alone.

There are a lot of reasons for a poor sales for HMV. Yes prices in shops are mroe dear then internet, as mentioned, overheads are more expensive, rent of a shop in middle of town is more, they are a niche seller thesedays. People do a big shop in a supermarket.
Also, supermarkets can buy in bigger bulk, buying for less, and can crush the people they buy from. Supermarkets will get as big a profit but the supplier won't be. Used to work in pork business with Tesco, Tesco can at a click of fingers change order like that. Sales arent tesco losing out it was us.
But then Chris hasn't worked ever so doesn't know business matters of just life matters.
Its all simple and very common economics/business matters.

I have a mate who works at the branch Merry Hill, Dudley and he told me back in October that they were planning to open up to 40 stores around the uk and ireland in places that had not got a hmv near jusut for the xmas market stocking just chart releases.
I would say that the majority of those will be stores that they shut. I hope that they dont shut my local hmv as it will be 15 mile to the next nearest for me if that one stays open though i was told that that one did less than Merry Hill and that town also had 2 hmvs in it. My local HMV still does physical cd singles the other 2 branches near to it 15 mile away dont and one of them has 4 or 5 floors and still doing worse than Merry Hill.
I really hope they dont go altogether. It will be the death of music for me as i hate all this download mp3. I want something to hold, to look at, to cherish... you cant do that with an mp3.

Agree with your first point. They did "pop up" stores the Christmas before and made a killing, so tried to do the same again this year and it obviously didn't work. At Meadowhall, Sheffield, there's a flagship store and yet they still opened another branch at the other end of the mall where all the posh clothes shops are. Absolutely pointless. It had better be these extra stores which close although what will happen to the staff, I don't know, as it wasn't simply a seasonal workforce operating in that extra branch.

There's 2 in Hull so i'm sure one of those will get the chop.
It is a shame but i can honestly say i can't remember the last time i bought a CD/DVD in store, always cheaper online, especially boxsets.

Why blame the supermarkets? HMV should reduce their prices. Simple as that. Zavvi and Woolies did that and look whats happened to them! Same as mic, I do hope this isn't signaling the end of HMV as I like a CD copy of music although these figures doesn't really show that. The recent weather hasn't helped matters either, especially in the run up to christmas and now with all sorts of financial changes (VAT/cuts) in 2011, I hope they survive through this year.

I think most of the stores that are closing will be the pop up stores, and where in some places there are 2 or 3 HMV's within 2 mins of each other. There is 2 in bluewater, and 2 in Maidstone 1 of those got to give.

But then Chris hasn't worked ever so doesn't know business matters of just life matters. My personal circumstances do not prevent me from commenting on news and events and your comment was out of order. People on DS are discussing this and some remark how much more expensive DVD entire-series box sets are in HMV. One was £119.99 yet on Amazon that person found it for £59.99. Now common-sense tells you where he/she bought it in the end. Also same box sets with 2 or 3 different prices. Maybe they can't sell as cheaply as Asda, fair enough, but a £60 difference isn't on!!

Was it by chance, in Amazon's sale? I'm sure if you looked at cheap boxsets in HMVs sale that weren't in Amazon's you'd be able to get it a lot cheaper!
I've bought loads of boxsets for reasonable prices in HMV anyway; Jonathan Creek, The Royle Family, Black Books, Peep Show

It also depends on stock levels, it could be that Amazon have a shedload that are not selling and have reduced them to clear

Norwich has 2, I'm not so sure if they'd chop one out. Both are quite big and very busy.
York has just the one, quite big store for york too. Also busy.

3 in glasgow, prob one of them for the chop I may be wrong, but I am sure I read somwhere that they werent going to close any in Scotland. A point that was made earlier, (by chris I think), I believe HMV to have an excellent selection of cheap box sets. I have bought many over the years and especially as Christmas Presents. All be it, the majority of time, it has been done on-line.

The online operation is based in the Channel Islands so there is no VAT. There are also much lower overheads which more than pays for the free postage. Also, it costs next to nothing to change the online price while it takes a lot more effort to reprice everything in-store.
