After reading all the year end polls there seems to be one person that I missed in 2010 and she is Janelle Monae. After listening to the album 'The Arch Android' she wasn't what I expected which was a good thing, she has this image of Grace Jones meets Lady Ga Ga but she has a more classic sound in general.
She reminds me of Basia who sang in Matt Bianco or a female Jaimroquai but she has just a hint of Rihanna to make her sound current.
Why she is a critics choice and not a star yet??
Anyone else discovered anybody in polls and year end lists?

I've loved Janelle since last year when I heard the ep! But there's always a couple I discover much too late.
I quite like Flyleaf, only listened to them a couple of days ago.

Don't think I missed any, other than some surprise at some of the artists in the year-end lists. Lots of love for Yeasayer and Ariel Pink which I didn't get at all.
The reason why Janelle Monae is not a star is simples. She hasn't received airplay. Like MIA and Joanna Newsom and lots of other critics' favourites.

Naked & Famous seems to be name that keeps cropping up on the lists of people whose taste in music is worth paying attention to. I don't remember hearing anything by them so I'll have to check them out.
That said, I've heard virtually nothing released in the second half of the year.

To give you an idea about the cluelessness of journalists, there is some idiot writing in the Times today saying that one should watch out for The Joy Formidable's debut album later this month.
I am now staring at my signed copy of their debut "A Balloon Called Moaning" that I got at one of their concerts last year.
So, it seems that music journalists missed more in 2010 than I did...

Not sure its counted as a proper album, its just a mini isnt it and most tracks were recorded on 4 track but even still bet the journalist still didnt know that, several of the mini-album tracks will be rerrecorded for the new album eg 'Austere' tbh I have heard the new version on the radio and it doesnt sound that much different which is great
