Hasn't the quality of indie singles gone downhill in recent times? I cannot remember any amazing indie single from 2010 The last great indie 'anthem' I can remember is Papillon by Editors... plus the Biffy album but apart from that... didn't we have greater indie singles in the past??? just think about the mid 90's when Oasis, Blur, the Manics, Pulp were at their peak!!

i find that a lot of the indie of the past few years sounds like the libertines, although i was under the impression that trend was reversing. it seems to be all about female-fronted these days.
what about the arcade fire's singles, though?

you just have to look harder and 2010 has been weak but 2011 will be better I think. Brother already have an indie anthem out today!!

borneoman: they've gone out of the UK singles charts but they are still there. Indie/rock artists still have a fair presence in the albums chart.
You should follow my chart and Thorney's chart for rock-based music (in the Personal Charts forum). Our styles are slightly different so combined you may find something you like. (KingB is leaving soon and will not be compiling a weekly chart now).
You could have a look at my chart of the year and Thorney's and KingB's where we are posting links or youtube videos of our favourite songs of 2010 and you may find a few you like.
This song, which peaked at #2 in my chart, is about as "anthemic" as it gets:
Here is another anthemic rock song:

I know there's lots of great stuff that never ever troubles the charts, I'd say 90% of the music I listen to never does anyway (but mostly I listen to folk/singer-songwriter stuff rather than indie)... but I still think it's been ages since we've had some real indie classic, do not count any x 2010... I mean, when was the last time we had a Creep, a Design for Life, a Teen Spirit, a Wonderwall? ? there were times in the past, the late 80s, mid 90s, when we had almost a classic per month :-)

As someone who loves indie music, the horrific radio/media/video overplaying to death of Sex On Fire put me off the genre (and maybe did the same for many others). Still maybe an act responsible for more than their fair share of indie anthems for a decade, may return to show the youngsters how it is done properly. www.nme.com/news/blur--2/54592

I would say Chelsea Dagger is up there with the indie anthems.
Wonderwall was a great song, of course, but for me it doesn't beat Don't Look Back In Anger, just "the" song I think of when I think of britpop.

Interesting conversation. I share the frustration. Radio is NOT a good place to discover new music. It takes a lot of personal effort and time to find out what is out there musically. To that end, I've recently started publishing a weekly chart of my 200 favorite current songs (it is not a 'singles' chart). My taste is mostly indie, folk, alternative and hard rock. About 140 of the songs have video(s) available to view on the same page, all here: www.big200favoriterocksongs.blogspot.com/There is always a lot of fantastic music being made by very talented artists. Don't let radio or popular sales figures fool you into thinking everything is crap. Good luck everyone in finding the new music that moves you.

Perhaps not what some would term an "anthem" but I *loved* "Pyro" by the Kings of Leon.

Oh, and this song is excellent too: "King of the Disco" by Rotten Bark. They're obscure enough not to be on Wikipedia yet...

not enough airplay means no big anthems. the great tracks/anthems are still here but unfortunately the music industry seems not to care. give any of these songs the promo it really deserves and everything is gonna change

The one I listed above by Needs Must is #196 in your chart, maybe you discovered it from my post above? You also have Young Rebel Set at #198 with a different song. I noticed Cloud Room in your chart with Hey Now Now. That song reached #2 in my chart but way back in 2007.
