Serena Williams has been taken to hospital with a blood clot on her lungs. The Wimbledon champion underwent surgery for a pulmonary embolism at the Cedars-Sinai medical centre in Los Angeles on Monday.
Her spokeswoman Nicole Chabot said the blood clot on Williams's lungs was discovered last week, and that she had "emergency treatment for a hematoma she suffered as a result" of that treatment.
"Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications," Chabot said.
Williams has been sidelined by two operations on her right foot after getting cut by glass at a restaurant, and has not played a competitive match since winning Wimbledon on 3 July.
