My favourites of that time were Suede, Blur, Pulp,Manic Street Preachers, Space, Ash, Verve, Catatonia. Also partial to a bit of James and the Lightning Seeds.

What's the point in voting? Surely it's to decide second behind "Different Class". I can't think of any other reason why that would not be in the poll, yet Cast are.

I think it's stretching a point to count Portishead as Britpop, TBH. Maybe the same goes for Dubstar as well. Of course I had to vote for Gene, although just between you and me I think Drawn To The Deep End was their best one. I preferred Olympian myself. I was a big fan of Gene and saw them many times.

Pulp recorded the best album of the 90s, by far, and not just restricting the genre to BritPop.
The voting selection above forces some tough choices. I was particularly a fan of Supergrass, but there are plenty of other great albums to vote for too. Cast and Kula Shaker don't get good press these days, but their debut albums contain some fine songs. Moseley Shoals is a consistent BritPop second division effort. And Ash's 1977 is spirited.

silly question, why was it called 'Brit Pop', I mean, Pop??? Who coined that term? and wouldn't Brit Rock be more fitting??? sure Oasis and all are rock rather than pop I'd say
I forgot I used to be a big fan of Placebo, not sure if they've been mentioned!!!

silly question, why was it called 'Brit Pop', I mean, Pop??? Who coined that term? Stuart Maconie claims to have used it first in the now-defunct Select magazine. and wouldn't Brit Rock be more fitting??? sure Oasis and all are rock rather than pop I'd say With hindsight, yes Oasis do seem more like a rock band, but people first started using the word they were talking about Suede, Pulp, the Auteurs and even Saint Etienne, who had a rather different sensibility. It just so happened that because Oasis showed up later in the game and went on to become so much more successful that they seem to be seen as a definition. It was probably easier for the record companies to find Oasis clones as well. In any case, I think the phrase "Britrock" was already is use by then for the likes of Terrorvision and Little Angels.

Not sure why brit pop, I don't agree that the music was "rock" or "indie", we were close enough at the time to the era where pop music was like that, and it was "popular" in the sense that it became mainstream, i.e. songs like "Wonderwall" were very commonly known and liked.
I think many were applauding the state of our music industry once again having gone through a bit of a downer, although never having quite dropped as low as it did subsequently.

Taking it at its most literal, Pop is short for popular and at the time it was the most popular style of music, the majority of it from UK acts hence Britpop

of course the word pop comes from popular, but that doesn't mean that everything popular is pop :-)

Has Suede's Dog Man Star (to include the bland commercial Coming Up over the greatest Britpop album of all-time IMHO is a joke if serious); Dubstar's Disgraceful; Portishead's Dummy and all Manic's albums been left out because they fall in the classic A list category or have they been snubbed/forgotten? will put them in a list category
