BT's genius decision to choose an all-Premier League tie is p*ssing me off, we could have had the Lincoin shock, but no, we have to suck up to the Premier League w*nkers because football started in 1992. So I'm boycotting.
Peel so we therefore get Jensen. Haysi Fantayzee. Love this duo. Kate is looking particularly fine tonight in a swimsuit, corset and kinky boots. Burning man hieroglyphs on the stand-up bass. Hello, I think that's Bobby Valentino on violin, the one who made a few bob with his improvised sting on "Young At Heart". Not the Septic who couldn't think of his own name so stole someone else. C.f. Anne Hathaway. Seriously, what sort of cretin decides to pick Shakespeare's wife as a pseudonym? Stealing history. Imperialists.
Anyway, that's a fun tune, and the chyron is excitingly slanted. Next up, Indeep. Someone in the crowd is VERY excited at that. Imagine if they teamed up with Stuart Goddard? They'd be Indeep And Ant. The girl in the little black dress is the better looking one but she doesn't do much of the singing. Very Lipps Inc. This is a dull single. No wonder it got sampled so much, there's nothing in it to stand out. The backing is basically the same chord ad nauseam. Still, girl in the black dress. Not convinced that the Edmonds tribute act behind the decks is actually the one who did the rapping.
Anyway, that's over, and the chyron curves in a cylinder. Fun Boy Three. Been a while since we've heard them. "Tunnel Of Love". Starts with a cinematic drum roll. Terry Hall is even less bothered to mime than before, he will be catatonic for the next single. This does have a noirish drama about it, I can imagine a Mr Cocker of Sheffield (not the one who was on last week) watching this and making notes. June Miles-Kingston on drums there, ex-Mo-Dettes, is this her debut on TOTP? Interesting that they've basically got a female backing band, interesting gender role switch there. Nice cellist.
Next up the Mac. From the Indeep DJ tribute act's show. This is very unlike previous Mac output, it's so middle-aged, middle-class, middle-of-the-road. It's like Neil Diamond working with The Carpenters. Stevie Nicks looks urinated off that she's got eff all to do other than wave a tambourine around like a spare part at a wedding. Occasional cutbacks to the TOTP studio to show some very middle-class dancing. It's like punk never happened.
The second great success story of 1983 is Kajagoogoo. Next.
Top 30. Peel seems enthusiastic. Polygon tiling background. Jam at 30. Eh? Thought they'd broken up. New entries otherwise are basically what was on last week. Jam at 20 as well. Double eh?
Hm. Tears For Fears. If they are not at no. 19 something has gone a bit wrong as the rundown went to 20. "Change". Nowhere near as good as their debut. Nice little key change in the middle bit of the verse. Otherwise it's a bit meh. Looks a bit like the Bez from Haircut 100 on the glockenspiel.
Okely-dokely. Back to the charts. Ah, it obviously once as we kick off at 18. Did Jensen say Keith Harris sang "Orrible Song"? I see the Mac went up 2 places despite being on Edmonds' Saturday show. Whereas Wham! took a TOTP performance to crash in at 11. Perhaps the Mac attack was in the album chart.
Anyway, we go on video to U2, who have taken a leaf out of Toyah's book with the horses. A reminder of when we used to get snow in winter. Bono might fall off that mountain if he stands too close to the Edge. The chyron forms a U2 out of the U2s.
Top 10 now in videos. Back to the future, evidently. Joe Jackson at 9 with what was voted one of the top videos of 1982. It wasn't that good. Madness and Ant should have monstered that award. Playing quite a bit of it despite it going down.
8. Echo & The Bunnymen. Hang on, this is a bit unfair. They're going to get the same as Joe Jackson even though they are going up? And playing U2 in the snow has stolen their Icelandic thunder.
7. The Mighty Wah!, Peel going retro with the name. Shame it didn't get to no. 1, says Peel. Well, we know why that is, don't we? Top Of The Pops deliberately f***ed them over. There must be a story about that. This is plainly magnificent, of course.
6. Laura Branigan. Another terrific single. I wonder how long this format will work though? It gives a huge amount of prominence to being in the top 10. These are not just clips, but significant portions of the songs. Isn't that going to cut out the time available to upcoming acts?
5. Kahagoogoo. Enough's enough, sez Peel. I entirely agree.
4. Belle Stars. Still going up, bit by bit. Clare looks like she's going to crack up at Lesley's dancing.
3. Collins. Eff this.
2. Grant. Bored.
1. Oh God. f*** OFF.
Playout is...hm, Pat Sharp is on next week? Oh. Billy Griffin. Dull, dull, dull, dull. Black music really needs a kick up the jaxie, disco has proved to be an atrocious turn. Can't someone bring some of the funk social comment back?

Indeep - "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" Much sampled, but absent the bassline and overall this is not a classic piece of late disco. And the male rap towards the end verges on the cringeworthy, but is at least brief. Not late disco for me, early "new style" R&B, given the name R&B was used in the 50s-early 60s for a different style of music that combined blues with rock & roll. A bt later in the year we will have the Mary Jane Girls with "All Night Long". And I did embrace this at the time as it was quite interesting and different. We did not hear the toilet flush sound effect though on TOTP.

I don't know what would have happened to the sales of Wah! if they had played it when it was #3. Men At Work had already leapt over it the previous week and Eddy Grant had made that big leap to #4 so was it destined to fall a place anyway?
They did get to play on TOTP when they were #34 in the chart, two weeks before, but it was a show that had Mike Smith as one of the DJs so it wasn't shown on BBC4.

The one play on TOTP saw SOTB go from 34 to 6. I don't think it's outrageous to suggest that it might not have gone up above Phil Collins and stayed ahead of Eddy Grant. Given that MAW went from 7 to 2 after a TOTP performance, so wouldn't have had that boost, it's definitely possible that a reminder of SOTB could have seen it sneak a week at the top.

It looks like the February 3rd show was originally scheduled to be only 30 minutes long, so the lengthy top 10 video play part was presumably included because they didn't have time to get anyone else to the studio when they suddenly gained an extra 10 minutes.
Fleetwood Mac's performance on The Late Late Breakfast Show was apparently on November 13th, so not much use in chart terms by late January / early February.

Pretty bland couple of shows this weekend, with the exception of the brilliant Belle Stars song. Strange to see the Top of the Pops studio audience dancing the show out to Jailhouse Rock - why was that back? I looked it up on the OCC site and it's actually been a hit several times, not just the two I knew about.
I've always accepted the conventional wisdom that Too Shy by Kajagoogoo is sh*te, but now I'm wondering why. Obviously the lyrics are pretty stupid, but somehow I still quite like it.

10 February. Long and Sharp. But enough about me. We're straight into The Belle Stars looking espionage-y in black. Carlos Valderrama on bass. This is a good look for them. My God, this p*sses all over everything that's made the charts this decade, though, doesn't it?
Back to Janice Long who appears to be standing next to a young Jo Brand. Warnes and Cocker. No ta.
Debutant up next. Down from 7 to 3. Must be Thompson Twins then, that's how they always seemed to be promoted. And it is. Although they're down to a trio there seem to be many more instruments required. Alannah has the silliest haircut this side of A Flock Of Seagulls. Decent enough synthpop, but have they missed the boat? This would have been to the forefront in 1981.
Daypesh Mode. What a comedown since Vince left. Yazoo have been executing some of the most perfect pop around; DM are resorting to this bland forgettable muzak. They're just not progressing. Can't work out whether they will soon be dropped or whether they can continue churning out enough number 27 singles to turn over a small profit and keep them on a roster.
Janice Long is dressed a bit like an ugly sister. On video, Toto, who appear to have Kevin Godley as lead singer, Cliff Richard on drums and that one from Kids From Fame on keys. Toto is a really, really, really rubbish name. Needs something on top of that to make it more interesting. In Toto for instance. Or something afterwards. "I must do what's right, sure as Kilimanjaro rises above the Serengeti". Um, the Septics really don't know their geography. Unless this is an ironic twist. Not a bad song, but lyrically it makes not one jot of sense.
Pat Sharp with a question. If you take the number 24 and turn it around, you get 42. As in Level 42. That's not a question. Anyway, once was enough of this.
MJ next up with a video. "Billie Jean". Wow, a good Jackson single. Promising. Interesting video too. I seem to recall at the time the director saying he didn't have a very big budget, so kept having to stop and re-shoot, because they could only afford a couple of illuminated tiles.
Charts. Lots of chart entries. Including for The Prince. CHARTS lit up in the background. We get one of those coincidences where we can stop at 21 to play someone. Unfortunately it's Central Line. Perhaps the reason was to get the chyron that looks a bit like a Tube map. The Beeb were probably proud of that.
Charts. At 18 it's up for Christian. Sounds a bit wrong. Most things are going down. And we're going back to China Crisis, because Central Line don't suck enough. Songs that could have been played instead: "The Harder They Come" by Rockers Revenge, "1999" by The Prince, "Cold Sweat" by Thin Lizzy, "He Knows You Know" by Marillion, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Musical Youth. I find this better to listen to if one plays "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" by Louis Jordan instead. On the basis that a Stargazers cover is in the bubbling unders. Not that Stargazers.
Top 10. No videos this time. Well, that worked. God almighty. Men Are sh*te are STILL number 1. And our playout is Elvis, because TOTP is nothing if it's not about promoting fresh new artists who desperately need the promotion.

10 Feb 1983 V young Pat Sharp and Janice Long
Kicking off with the Belle Stars "Sign Of The Times" We've seen this already, twice, I think, it's still great, the bands attire varies too. Lead singer her almost gives the appearance (her top half, anyway) of being veiled, all in black, but with playing cards arrayed in the brim of her hat. Enjoying their fame while it lasts....
Audience wearing many fezzes
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes "Up Where We Belong" live on video. capable performers, of course, but I'm happy to fast forward this one... It goes on for too long anyway.
First ever TOTP performance of the Thompson Twins, with "Love On Your Side" Rivalling Kajagoogoo for ungreat haircuts, this is a fine slice of pop that would have been avant garde a couple of years earlier, and is still sharp and characterful. Great rhythm track, too.
Depeche Mode "Get The Balance Right" Did "joyride" mean "stealing cars" in 1983? Even in Basildon I don't think so. They look so young and vulnerable, and this is understated and less cringeworthy than some of their early-mid 80s material is lyrically. Still barely a hint of the Stadium Rock Gods With Problems they would become. Not bad.
Toto "Africa" on video Has certainly not been underplayed in the intervening 34 years...and as it more or less superior MOR, fair enough....
Level 42 "The Chinese Way" Probably best heard in a restaurant in Romford. Probably not at a conference of history teachers.
Michael Jackson "Billie Jean" on video First UK screening of the video, we are told. A masterful piece of pop music, anyway.
Charts
Central Line "Nature Boy", which again we've seen before. Mellow, agreeable. have no idea how it compares to (or differs from) the George Benson version though..
Charts
China Crisis "Christian" which again we've seen before, but warrants revisiting. Solumn and serious.
Charts . I notice Janet Long has a habit of saying some song titles in the rhythm in which they are sung - notable on both "Heartache Avenue" earlier, and , here, "Electric Avenue". So maybe it's just hte word "avenue".
No1 on video again, Men At Work "Down Under" Which is alright
Dance out to Elvis "Jailhouse Rock". Nice retro dnacing from the crowd.
A bit average, overall.

17 Feb 1983 Peter Powell and Gary Davies
Wham! - "Wham Rap" GM exuding star quality already.
on video Tears For Fears "Change" Melancholy in the shadow of looming glass towers, mad dancers-drummers in the office block to accompany, then ghostly apparitions escape. Anti-corporate boredom, like WHam, or anti-urbanisation and industrialisation?
Icehouse "Hey Little Girl" Understated and simmering, very much of its time.
Musical Youth "Never Gonna Give You Up" on video Stately and quite old-fashioned in its way, vastly less irritating than "Pass The Dutchie">
on video Madness "Tomorrow's Just Another Day" "the masters of video" - rightly said, in a cops-n-crims prison scenario - and so much more, nutty boys are nutty boys, by no means their finest work, but fun as ever, if somewhat incidental.
Charts
Haysi Fantaysee "Shiny Shiny" Post-punk brilliance and attitude in full effect. hadn't noticed before that they rhyme "hot retard" with "Marquis de Sade"...
Charts
Fun Boy Three "The Tunnel Of Love" Can't help but think that Terry Hall is a bit underrated and has been throughout his career. Earnest or deadpan? A bit of both. A great late Two-Tone-derived sound. FB3 could be a bit hit and miss, but is certainly "hit".
Charts
Play-out to the new no 1 Kajagoogoo "Too Shy" Which is very much better than anything Ellis Beggs and Howard ever achieved....
A short show, with Haysi Fantaysee the clear standout

3 March 1983
Kid 'n Peel, the joyboys of radio, chasing electrons to and fro. Each in a top with the other's name on, rhythm pals.
Icehouse "Hey Little Girl" understated and languid, shirts all round and a jacket for the singer. Not a bad group all in all
Forrest "Rock the Boat" on video. Can't remember how this differs from the original, it's pretty tolerable I suppose.
OMD "Genetic Engineering" Experimental brilliance, spoken, then sung, futuristic, scientific, percussive, megaphone-in-hand, from the brilliant if defiantly uncommercial "Dazzle Ships" LP. Close to OMD at their best, maybe even actually at their best, but evidently by now too recherché for a mass mass audience. The crowd here are happily bopping up and down to this bit of Open University wonder though.
Charts
Bananarama "Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye" Pre-intense sexualisation of their appearance, far closer to their alternative origins, no oiled-up topless male dancers yet. Which is good as they would only distract from this rather simple and likeable number. Straightforward and unfussy minor-key fun, almost.
Charts
Patti Austin and James Ingram "Baby Come To Me" A bit of a late night classic. Beautiful duetting and interplay in the chorus. Decidedly superior. And emotional.
Top 10 video show Fun Boy 3 - Tunnel of Love. Moody and fab. Thompson Twins - Love On Your Side. Pretty fine also. Very 1983 haircuts Madness - Tomorrow's Just Another Day The video is better than the song. Classic entertainers. Tears for Fears - Change Underrated track. Musical Youth - Never Gonna Give You Up Ah, sweet and quite charming. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams. A drop dead classic, of course, the video as well as the song. How could Annie Lennox ever hope to equal this I'm not sure. Toto - Africa Middle of the road fodder, but better than many such. Kajagoogoo - Too Shy No longer on top, still with the silliest hair. Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart Brilliantly over the top. Great excess as only Jim Steinman can pull off.
No 1 on video play out to the end Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
A strange and flawed edition, overly dominated and unbalanced by all those videos, but the standard of music was pretty high, and the quality of presentation by Kid and Peel unusually first rate.

I record the TotP 1983 editions which are shown on BBC4 at around midnight, but the recent episodes have seemed shorter than usual. There's 3 possible reasons for this:
1 I imagined it 2 BBC4 have started showing the edited versions at night as well as at 7.30pm 3 The original shows were shorter than usual
Does anyone know which it is? And if it's number 3 is this the point where they standardised to 30 minutes or is it just a temporary change?

There was one recent edition that was broadcast on each occasion with a length of 25 minutes. I understand that one had a chunk of Jonathan King presenting the US charts (plus a broadcast of "Baby Come To Me" from the UK chart immediately afterwards, which JK introduced) cut out. That might well have amounted to 10 minutes being cut than five, though. I suspect we may be approaching the point of 30-minute standardization, but I don't think we're quite there yet

You'd have to be from that generation to really understand "Wham Rap".
In 1983, a school-leaver could claim benefit, even if they were living with their parents and their parents were wealthy, as the means-testing was on one's own wealth, not on that of their parents. So I was also able to claim once we reached September after I had finished school. I am 2 years younger than George Michael, and ironically UB40 were #1 when I first claimed benefit.
This meant someone like George Michael, whose parents were moderate middle-class, could enjoy his young life "on the dole" using the benefit as "pocket money" to have fun.
Of course, it also meant he had the time available to compose music and go for a career in it. And of course once he started making a lot of money from that, he was paying a lot more back more in taxes than he had ever claimed in benefit. (So have I).
"Na Na Hey Hey..." did Bananarama only cover this because of the "na na" in the title? It wasn't that good to start with and I really disliked this cover version. Fortunately they'll come back later in the year with their own original song which is far far better. I prefer their cover of "Venus", of which the original was a hit around the same time as that of "Na Na Hey Hey.."
Madness "Tomorrow's Just Another Day". A decent song but for me a drop in standard and the start of that, in reality. I equated the recent "Mr Apples" as being about level with this song, but that still puts it behind many of the earlier ones. (Both songs peaked in my chart at #3).

17 March 1983 Gary Davies and Tony Blackburn
Bananarama - "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" Bit annoying the way the episodes we're not allowed to see keep intervening, so we see the same tracks over again. A new performance, new outfits, but this is still rather slight, wherein lies its charm, I suppose.
Style Council - "Speak Like A Child" on video Video that starts out on top deck of an open-top bus, countryside shenanigans. There's still a power and energy and undertone of aggression here alongside a style that represents an evolution of that familiar from some late Jam numbers. I'm generally agnostic about the Style Council, but this track stands up well.
Mezzoforte - "Garden Party" From Iceland, Tony tells us, while reminding us how very expensive records are in Iceland. Charming playful instrumental dancy number, kind of in the area of Shakatak with added bass and guitar riffs.
Ultravox - "Visions in Blue" - on video More enigmatic restraint from Midge Ure's latest band. Maybe too much enigma and too much restraint for once. This takes time to come alive, and when it does - well I'm not sure it was worth the wait. Lots of style, but too little substance.
Charts
Bucks Fizz - "Run For Your Life" Immediately recognizable as Bucks Fizz, but maybe the glitter is starting to fade a little with repetition. It's alright as light entertainment goes, but seems almost like a pastiche constructed from elements found in earlier, and stronger, singles of theirs.
Charts Joan Armatrading "Drop The Pilot" Her first TOTP performance since 1976 (indeed only her 3rd -and as it turned out final - top 40 hit), this is more like it. Characterful, assertive, determined song from a class act. "Drop the mahout". I had to look up what that means.
Charts No1 is Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart" - studio performance, much dry ice, but not as much as one might expect. The song and performance, crashing thunderbolts and all is obviously a bit ridiculous and self-consciously melodramatic, but brilliantly, exquisitely so.
Dance out to Forrest "Rock The Boat"
Not bad overall.

14 years plus one day. Powell and Davies. Wow, they start with an inspiring line-up. Shame the opening track is Wham! Ridgeley is not even trusted on backing vocals now. Paean to unemployment. Quite bold but not really that good.
Tears For Fears with "Change". We've had this before. Don't remember the video. It's like Wicker Man set in the City. Icehouse. We are beginning to see the stirrings of Yuppie Pop. This is as close to a record in which nothing happens as is possible. The perfect accompaniment to a wine and cheese soiree with tastefully arranged Dire Straits CDs.
TOTP exclusive video. Musical Youth. I suppose Duddeston Manor wouldn't give them the time off. This is a very forgotten single, people keep thinking of Ver Yoof as one-hit wonders but this went into the single digits.
Brutally short segue into Madness. Has something been cut? "Tomorrow's Just Another Day". As usual, a brilliant video, and a brilliant song. Back to the futility of "Grey Day" and at the end a throwback to "Baggy Trousers".
Top 30. Someone holding a couple of torches waving them around the 30s. Haysi Fantayzee at 23, they're going to be on, according to the top of the show. Daypeshay.
Oh, and here are the Hayz. The album - Battle Hymns For Children Singing - is one of the great album titles of history, right up there with Trouble Over Bridgwater. Kate looking fine. But more restrained than normal. Maybe because the stage is full.
Back to the 20. Pretty much everyone who has been on in the last couple of weeks. Repeat showing of a Fun Boy Three TOTP performance.
Top 10. Big leaps for Toto and Jackson. Belle Stars still at three, alas. MAW are down. Kajabloodygoogoo at 1. Interesting that Powell seems extremely downbeat for a band hitting the top with their first single. And they are on the playout. Lack of confidence in them?
Hm. That was a short show.

3 March. Peel & Kid in tribute knitwear. We start with Icehouse for no adequately explored reason. It was boring as f*** before, it's boring as f*** now. God knows what they're are doing with the chyron at the end. Seems to be trying to make KK.
Forrest with a pointless cover of "Rock The Boat". This came a bit out of nowhere. The video showcasing the best of the technology available in 1977. Turns out he died in 2013. Blimey. Most interesting fact about the video is that it features that shameless famewhore Sinitta.
OMD. This is one of THE great singles. I remember being amazed that this had only got up to no. 25. No sign of Maureen on stage to do her bits. Martin seems almost embarrassed to get a vocal role. And he's not convincing anyone with that loudhailer. Could they not get the rights to have a Speak & Spell on stage? For some reason this was not on the Best Of OMD vinyl. This still sounds astonishing now. Stark, cold, vital. Not sure the balloons are really fitting. That synth sting is begging to be sampled. McCluskey is wearing the Stewart tartan. Inconsistent. Mal giving the drums the beans. Don't think the tartan was a good move. For this one they should really have gone full Kraftwerk. But, my God, what a single. The finish is like a downbeat Dr Who episode. Back to the start, the instruments dying out one by one...
Top 30. David Joseph. Who? Oh God. Modern Romance are in the 30. They're going to get played, aren't they?
The Nanas are at 21 so they get a play. Would they have missed out had they been at 22? Oh, Keren. Their dancing has a very Pipettes vibe. There is a joy in it not being so choreographed and professional. The Beyonces of this world are too perfect, too sterile, too created. This is "let's do the show right here", the charging the stage because the main act is hopeless and giving it a go. This is joie de vivre, triumphant, in yer face, vibrant. Don't get any of that with Bouncy.
Back to the charts. Phil Everly and Cliff Richard? Has he fallen out with his bro? Depeshay. Back to 18. Austin & Ingram. Sounds more like a firm of solicitors than a chart-bound duet. This is gash.
The top 10 video show. People wanted to see it again. OK, who dropped out THIS week? Otherwise it is a very short and lacking show. Albeit high quality. Anyway.
10. FB3. Very black and white yet is not really noir. It's an interesting role reversal to have a backing group of women and fronted by men. Reverse Pipettes.
9. Thompson Twins. Alannah with her mad hair.
8. Madness. Just seen it.
7. TFF. Ditto.
6. Musical Youth. Tritto.
5. Back to the androgyny as we see Eurythmics. Bit of a change from The Tourists. I remember at the time thinking that this needed more lyrics. It is brilliant, of course.
4. Toto. They all look like someone else. Chas of 'n' Dave, Cliff Richard, Lol Creme. Perhaps they were a supergroup without us knowing?
3. The Googs are already off the top of the chart. No wonder. Emperor's new clothes. Just bloody boring and repetitive.
2. Bonnie Tyler. Wow, that's out of nowhere. It's one heck of a song, but the video is RIDICULOUS. Fortunately someone did a better version of it...
Presumably this was on last week too? Hence its rise to 2? Which means the Video Show might have had an impact - more people saw it a second time than would otherwise have done. Means it's looking good for next week...
Playout is the number 1 again. Even more good omens for Tyler...
