From Music Week
Kaiser Chiefs are allowing fans to create their own running order and artwork for their new album, The Future Is Medieval, and take a share in any sales.
Using the band’s official site, kaiserchiefs.com, fans can build a bespoke 10-track album from a choice of 20 songs (with 60-second clips of all tracks available to stream in advance). They can then create their own cover and download it for £7.50.
They can then build their own website to sell their version of the album, taking a £1 share for every copy sold.
In an official statement, the band said their intention was “to create a music experience that can be shared and enjoyed by all and at the same time revitalise and subvert the industry standard”.
"It can re-engage the excitement and spontaneity of offering new music immediately to fans, allowing them to hear the record at the same time as media and critics alike and hopefully giving people a fun experience at being the Kaiser Chiefs A&R department,” they added.
A traditional 13-track physical album will follow.
The Future Is Medieval is the band’s fourth album and the follow up to 2008’s Off With Their Heads, which has sold almost 217,000 units in the UK to date.

Nothing you haven't been able to do already for a long time, as long as you could burn CDs, and I started burning them for the first time in 2000.
Sounds like an excuse to try to rip off the public again. Who exactly is going to buy one from the fans website?

Even if you buy all 20 tracks in 2 albums thats still £15 which is alright for a double album, you dont have to do it,you can just wait for the proper cd. gawd so serious!

interesting idea, they know sales are badly down on indie music in general and their music just hasn't been that great since their debut, one or two songs from their last few albums were good but this could be just average run of the mill boring stuff like almost every other indie band have made with thier 3rd or 4th records, ran out of ideas come to mind

Sounds like an excuse to try to rip off the public again. Who exactly is going to buy one from the fans website? Strictly speaking I dont think what you have been doing is the same as this. They have written 20 songs and its up to you to choose which ones you want to put onto your own album. If you buy an album you are stuck with the 10 or so tracks the band think should be on the album. In the past some left over tracks would be b sides but bands dont really need them now. So why not let the people buying the music decide what songs they want to form the album? I think its a very good idea and is thinking outside the box which when selling music nowadays you need to do. I cant really think how its ripping off the public as £7.50 for a 10 song album is pretty good and obviously if you want them all then its £15 which is decent for two albums worth of songs. The one thing that I dont get is the selling on of the album you have made and I cant really see why someone would want to buy what someone else has done. Surely the fun is doing it for yourself and I am looking forward to creating my own album later. But at the sametime its a nice gesture that if you do happen to sell any you get money for it. It is a pretty unique idea.

A nice little gimmick, but I agree with Earl Purple, it's not exactly unique, just take any classic Rock sprawling double Album:
i.e. The Beatles' White Album; Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde; Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland; The Who's Tommy; Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street; Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road; Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti; Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life; The Clash's London's Calling; Pink Floyd's The Wall; Bruce Springsteen's The River; Prince's Sign O' The Times; etc .... through to numerous maximum near 80 minutes CD albums .....
and you can edit and make your own "under one side of a C90 tape length (sub 45 minutes)" killer album.
Mind you I really like their new single "Little Shocks":

It is unique though because no one has officially done this, no band has said go and do this before and no band has said you can make money from selling there music before. I own loads of albums but I can say I have ever felt the need to make my own cds from the albums before although I suppose the fact I dont always put the whole album on my mp3 player is sort of the same.

Think your missing the point daz this is the album they only recorded 20 songs there arent anymore to come. Having listened to all the clips on the website there are a few dud tracks in my opinion although others have chosen some of the ones I dont like very much so it just goes to show everyone likes different stuff, which is why I think its such a good idea. Im pretty happy with the 10 songs Ive chosen and glad Ive had the chance to pick the ones I wanted on the album. A fair few of the songs are different to anything theyve ever done before and in my view it does no harm in giving all the songs a listen (they provide a minute clip of each) and if you dont want to buy you dont have to.

i understand perfectly, i will still pass though, if i like what i hear i will buy the 13 track physical album, the 13 best tracks in the bands opinion. i will not buy a double album of all 20 songs and end up buying 7 tracks that are not good enough for an album (ie filler ontop of the usual filler they already have on the album). yeah picking 10 songs is probably a good thing because i doubt they have 13 good songs to make it onto an album anyway. actually i think i would prefer just a blank cd lol

Ive heard bands bsides before, including the Kaisers, and wondered why they werent on the album as they were better than songs on the album. Everyone has a different opinion on what songs they like so I think its a good idea to choose which ones I want. I think if a band you actually liked had come up with this idea you would be a lot different towards it. Also I am not going to buy all 20 songs as I didnt like enough of the others to warrant it.

i do like the kaiser chiefs, i have seen them live and pre ordered their debut album. i just think their material is a bit weak these days. now if they released a best of in this format with an option to add songs from their upcoming 13 track physical album i would think it was a great idea

It's an interesting idea, hopefully they leave it open for long enough such that after the full album is out we can pick our favourite 10 tracks (including from the 7 unreleased ones) - rather than rely on an initial reaction to 60 second clips.

A lot of it sounds like nothing they have ever done before. I actually think the album I have made is decent but that there isnt a stand out song for me like there has been on their other albums.

I agree the 60 second clips arent really enough. I was able to hear one of the tracks in full and it ended up being over 5 minutes long and sounded like a perfect end to the album, whereas on hearing the short clip I had it at the start.
