Superb band, who will regain the street cred they once enjoyed, in due course.
My favourite albums...
1. Making Movies 2. Love Over Gold 3. Brothers In Arms 4. Alchemy 5. Dire Straits

my dad was a massive fan - his favourite track was 'brothers in arms', we played it at his funeral so it will always be special to me another random dire straits fan - the earliest song i can ever remember hearing is 'on every street' - the distinctive riff at the end stuck in my memory the first time i heard it.

I love Dire Straits. Brothers In Arms is a great album. Some critics and fans say it's not aged well but I don't find that. I think it was the best-seller of 1985 and 1986!

Mark Knopfler's guitar work will never age, he's one of the best of all time IMHO.

I think my brother had Brothers in arms, so I listened to it a fair bit, but I really like Romeo & Juliet and Sultans of Swing.

I saw them at the Rainbow in Finsbury Park around the time Sultans Of Swing was a hit.

Personally, I think they are the nadir of 1980s music (pre SAW). If I ever hear a pub singer ever perform Walk Of Life & Money For Nothing ever again it would be far too soon.
I've always felt if Dire Straits ever collaborated with Chris Rea then their super group would be the most aptly titled band in popular music history.

I added Walk Of Life to the ukulele wednesdays list! Someone else tried adding Money For Nothing but it just didn't work for ukulele so I suggested Walk Of Life instead and did the score for it and that one worked really well so it got added to the book.
I never really got into Private Investigations as a song, never understood why that was their biggest hit (ok joint biggest hit). I do have the Brothers In Arms album.
