THE NATION'S FAVOURITE NUMBER 1 SINGLEAs it is the 60th Anniversary of the UK Singles Chart, a huge Poll has begun, to find the Country's Favourite Number 1 Single. There have been 1,192 UK No.1 Singles, since November 1952. A Panel Of Experts have made a short-list of 60 of those No.1's. & you can Vote for them. Each Voter can choose 10 of the 60 No.1 Hits. www.itv.com/nationsfavouritenumberone/www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/going-out/music/as-the-pop-charts-celebrate-60-years-794406www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-nations-favourite-number-one-single-1337/Later this Year, the results will be revealed in a 3 Part TV Series, on ITV1 & ITV1+1. They might be planning to reveal the order of the entire Top 60, for it to be spread over 3 Shows. AN HONOUR FOR THE BEATLES, ABBA, & MADONNAThe Beatles, ABBA, & Madonna, are the only 3 Acts, to have had 2 of their No.1 Hits chosen to be Voted on. The Beatles get I Want To Hold Your Hand, (1963), & Hey Jude, (1968), & ABBA get Dancing Queen, (1976), & The Winner Takes It All, (1980). Madonna gets Like A Prayer, (1989), & Vogue, (1990). So, The Beatles are the only Act with 2 No.1's chosen from the same Decade, & ABBA & Madonna, are the only Acts with 2 No.1's chosen from different Decades.

So it's the nations favourite #1 ever, out of the ones selected by a panel of experts. Why can't they just give us the full list and let us vote from that?

They failed to shortlist Bad Romance - one of the most iconic and loved #1 singles.
Anyway, The Winner Takes It All is the best #1 record of all time. UnfoRtunately Dancing Queen is also nominated which will split the Abba vote.
I'll probably vote for West End Girls just because PSB are the best, even though there are plenty of better #1 records.
Edit: oh great, you can vote for several records!

Another oddity is including You've Lost That Loving Feeling, but NOT Unchained Melody which has been a million seller in THREE different incarnations (but everybody knows that the Righteous Brothers version is the definitive version).

Just voted for 10 records in no particular order, but I somehow overlooked Wuthering Heights. Shame.

It entirely nullifies the validity of this poll. Who are these people to say what the best 60 #1s are? Their opinion is no more valid than anyone else's. I suppose the logistics of having a list of over 1000 titles would have been a nightmare but it would have been the only way to at least get a true reflection.

The best would have been dividing it into groups:
First the best #1 single of each year. Then the best #1 single of each decade, contested between the year winners Then the best #1 single overall, contested between the decade winners
But obviously that isn't doable if you want others than chart fanatics like us voting. They're going for broad participation here and for that they simply needed to narrow the field. While I have plenty of objections as to which records were chosen and which were left out, I will at least acknowlegde that the vast majority of those 60 records they picked are classics and that it is highly unlikely that a #1 hit not on that list would end up winning anyway.
Not including ANY S/A/W records is a scandal though. I could see Never Gonna Give You Up get plenty of votes.

"Hey Jude" will win this I reckon. Although I'd like to know which "experts" were involved in the choice. Some of the most iconic songs missed out, but R Kelly included?

The experts are listed in the Official Charts Company link above - Stuart Copeland, Shaznay Lewis, Mike Read....

Might be a bit overdone. Trouble with these things though is they get hijacked. Remember when "I Owe You Nothing" was voted Greatest Single Of All Time?

I agree, for this to be a valid poll ALL the no.1's should have been eligible, not just 60 out of more than 1,000. Looking at the list chosen, I expect Bohemian Rhapsody will probably win.

So it's just one per year? Bizarre!
Edit - didn't see the full list, but there are years without a single entry too. Might have made more sense to choose one per year, then per decade etc as others have suggested. One from the whole 1950s is ridiculous!

Especially as the one from the 50s is not the most important single in history.
