Can some kind soul explain the River Song storyline again please. Which bit of it?! The only bit you needed to know from the Christmas special was that the Twelfth Doctor (after putting things off in his previous incarnations) finally realised he was going with River to the last destination she ever went before her fateful trip to the Library (see 2008's "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead" which was the first time the Doctor ever really met River from his perspective but was the last time she ever met him from her perspective. She knew all about him from her extensive diary and whilst she didn't quite know for sure it was her death she was going to, it was easy to guess as her diary was now full and the Doctor was emotional when she last saw him). He had one last night to see River before she left, and on that particular world, the night lasted 24 years. He spent that time with her (after the end of last year's special) and we seem to have picked up his story in this year's special, where he was still quite sad about things.

Personally, I found it all a bit fun, insubstantial, slapstick, & lightweight.
Still that's what the masses wants at Xmas. But it made the plot of Mrs Brown's Boys Xmas Special seem complicated in comparison.
Needless to say if Dr Who was like this all the time I would soon give it on it.
The best NuWho Chrimbo Special remains by far "Voyage of the Damned".

Quite enjoyable and not too dark and deep.
Is Nardol gonna be an assistant. The trailers seem to show it.

It was ok, just fun, usually Christmas specials are practically poor, the best xmas special was with Kylie and david Tennant, I think that's the one that RA Liverpool is talking about.

He must be 40 years older than the assistant...

Not a surprise really. This 3 year cycle is getting tedious now.
For me he was way too old.
I wonder who will play him next.

That was expected, he only signed a 1 year contract, I must admit as a Doctor a huge improvement on the previous one, I wouldn't be surprised if they go with someone younger. I actually wouldn't mind Edris Elba or Sean Pertwee to take on the role.

I feel quite sorry for Peter Capaldi, as he was/is a great actor let down by all too frequently poor storylines (thanks to the show runner Moffat seemingly running out of ideas and out staying his welcome); furthered hindered by the limited acting abilities of Jenna Coleman (as proven by anyone who watched series 1 of Victoria) with her Ciara character taking over the show; and that is without mentioning the worst character of NuWho, Danny Pink (actor Samuel Anderson, who was otherwise excellent in Trollied & DCI Banks); plus BBC clearly cutting back on their budget for the show (thanks to the Tories/Murdoch & Dacre press).
Roll on new showrunner Chris Chibnall (interestingly he was at the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards in London last night when Capaldi dropped the bombshell on Radio 2's Jo Whiley show, where two former female Who assistants won the Best actress in a Play (Billie Piper (Rose Tyler))& Best Actress in a Musical (Sheridan Smith (Lucie Miller) awards), let's hope it is of the standard of the first two series of Torchwood; & the 1st series of Broadchurch, and especially the brilliant one of An Adventure In Space and Time .... but if it is as terrible as Broadchurch Series 2 or his The Great Train Robbery then this show is screwed.

Jenna Coleman was brill, and is brill, end of, I don't get the hate towards her. There is no hate, it is just that she is clearly (as Victoria showed) a limited actress. She is hardly on the level of a Billie Piper; let alone our very top female TV actresses Olivia Colman; Maxine Peake; Sarah Lancashire; Suranne Jones; and (as last night's best-performing new drama launch in three years for BBC 1 Moorside drama effortless proved again) Sheridan Smith.
