I hadn't ever bothered to explore his work beyond the poignant 'Time in a bottle', but after hearing the track 'I got a name', which is very reminiscent of early Elton John, on the new Django Unchained Tarantino soundtrack I downloaded his Greatest Hits and was more than a bit pleasantly surprised. I was even more surprised to learn that he never had any hits in the UK and that the mega-talented singer-songwriter died aged just 30 in a plane crash. I think someone should start a campaign to get 'I got a name' into the charts.

I believe "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" got to number 1 in the USA, he was a big name over there in the early 70's. If you want IGAN back in the charts just get some x-factor moron to sing it....... :>)

Only know Time In A Bottle. His music though does nothing for me sadly.

A wonderful and much under rated artist, here in the UK especially. Jim has yet to have a single entry on either the UK singles or albums charts (despite the release of a number of Compilation records over the years). He achieved one No 1 song in the US during his lifetime (Bad Bad Leroy Brown) and one posthumous chart topper three months after his death (Time In A Bottle). As well, he became one of only a handful of artists to have the No 1 and No 2 album on the Billboard chart in the same week (although sadly this too was posthumous). I have his Greatest Hits compilation on my i-pod, and I always feel a little sad when I think of him; but mainly because of what might have been if he had lived a little longer. I'm all for seeing this late great artist get the posthumous recognition his talent deserves.

"I Got A Name" was the theme for the film The Last American Hero, loosely based on an article by Tom Wolfe on NASCAR in the sixties - which in turn was based on top driver Junior Johnson, who, back in those comparatively lawless days, was busted for moonshine distilling. As Johnson pointed out they caught him at the still, not on the road transporting the stuff.
