the queen is dead is definitely my favourite, but meat is murder is more accomplished.

Meat is murder never really played it as much as the others has some great tracks like headmaster ritual and how soon is now but don't like it as much as the others

yeah, same here. i do think that musically it's more accomplished so in that sense 'better' but i do prefer TQID. 'some girls are bigger than others' has to be one of the best album closers in indie history.

Strangeways is the one I still listen to occasionally so I'd have to say that one.

'Hatful' was my first Smiths Album so it is kind of special but 'The Queen Is Dead' is practically perfect.

Ooh, difficult one. And do you count Meat Is Murder without How Soon Is Now or the repackaged one that contains the track?
The Queen Is Dead is "lighter" Smiths, more accessible to the public. Meat Is Murder is the "darker" side of them. Strangeways Here We Come has some incredible moments on it, e.g. The Death of a Disco Dancer and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. The first album has too much "filler" for my liking and I rarely listed to Hatful Of Hollow as Louder Than Bombs has most of the songs on it.
At the time I was totally utterly obsessed with the Smiths I felt that Meat Is Murder was the best album. I would therefore have to vote for that one.

^ ha, i never even knew that 'meat is murder' had been repackaged. i always think of it as having 'how soon is now?'
my period of obsession with the smiths was mostly during my first year at uni - TQID came out the year i was born so of course i missed them the first time around. i first got the best of (copied for me by a friend) and then bought (in order) TQID, hatful of hollow, meat is murder, the smiths, the world won't listen and finally strangeways here we come. i can barely remember 'strangeways...' - i don't think i liked it very much and i very rarely listen to it as the only songs i really liked were on other albums.
'hatful of hollow' is a great album, though. i particularly love 'back to the old house' which is one of their best songs IMO.

I really like the debut album really interesting listen and in some ways think the dull production adds to the records intrigue.

It's a shame you barely listened to Strangeways because it has a lot of great songs and I can't recall any poor ones. "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before" is on it, as well as "The Death Of A Disco Dancer" and "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me", and of course the much quoted "Paint A Vulgar Picture" due to the number of times the Smiths themselves have been repackaged...

both 'stop me...' and 'last night...' are on the best of. never did like 'last night...' much - morrissey being just a shade too miserable and mopey even by his standards.

I think The Queen is Dead is their best by miles, especially the 2nd half of the album...followed by Strangeways. I do like Last Night I Dreamt, yes, it's a bit miserable but I'm a sucker for sad depressing songs in perspective, it's weird that they didn't release There is a Light as a single off The Queen is Dead... same with Stop Me off Strangeways

To rank their four proper studio albums in order of my preference:
1st The Queen Is Dead 2nd Strangeways Here We Come 3rd The Smiths 4th Meat Is Murder

Apparently 'Stop Me...' was going to be released as a single, but it was cancelled because of the Hungerford massacre, which made the lyric about "a shy Buddhist [contemplating] mass murder" inappropriate. It did get a release in America, and presumably some other places as well.

1. the queen is dead 2. meat is murder 3. the smiths 4. strangeways, here we come
'hatful of hollow' goes in at about 2.5; the very best of probably around the same place.
