A great race in torrentially wet conditions. Muller, Magnussen and Sainz all utterly shone.
Sainz's place in Zeta for the rest of the season is very interesting. He's a Red Bull junior, and he's been slotted in to put a bit of pressure on Felix da Costa who has disappointed this year. However Felix da Costa is probably still a cert for Ricciardo's Toro Rosso seat. Sainz stalled on the grid and was one of the fastest men all race en route to 7th, whereas Felix da Costa clumsily spun into Aleshin and retired. 1-0 Sainz.
And kudos to Sirotkin. A lot of people have labelled him as a pay driver and dismissed him as rubbish, but he did very well in Auto GP last year and FR 3.5 this year against drivers much older and more experienced than him. I don't think he'll be ready for an F1 seat with Sauber next year, but if he's in the team I think he'll do better than most people expect.

Forget about mathematics - it's Leimer vs Bird. Both have been impressive this year, but I really would like Sam to take it in Abu Dhabi. He's made a big step his year. He's not ordinarily been the most winningest driver in his career but the fact he's taken 5 wins now for a brand new team and was only signed days before the season opener commands a lot of respect.
In terms of out and out potential Nasr and Frijns impressed me most this year. Frijns was unlucky that budget ruled him out of the season and he had so much bad luck. But the raw pace is there. Nasr has been very consistent for someone so inexperienced. He's been unfortunate not to win a race yet this year.

With one double-header to go (Barcelona on 19-20 October), only Magnussen and Vandoorne can mathematically win. Vandoorne will however need at least a 1-2 even if Magnussen doesn't score.
Something that is interesting to note however:
Last 3 winners of FR3.5: Robin Frijns, Robert Wickens, Mikhail Aleshin Last 3 runners-up of FR3.5: Jules Bianchi, Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniel Ricciardo
So FR3.5 seems to be the X-Factor of the motor-racing world!

Yes but Bianchi, JEV and Ricciardo were heavily supported by F1 teams. Their competitors were not (Aleshin and Wickens had been dropped by Red Bull when they won their championships). I would conclude that the 3 drivers that made F1 underperformed in their respective years. Ricciardo most of all - in truth Guerrieri should have won that year. Wickens went on to be a race winner in DTM and Frijns has shown this year that he's still a potential star, so the champions are no slouches.

I haven't been following the Indycar championship closely this year but I noticed Simona de Silvestro finished 2nd in race 1 in Houston yesterday. I've always thought she had great potential as a road/street course racer (moreso than Danica Patrick, who always seemed better on ovals) so it's great to see her finish on the podium.
The title seems to be a 2-horse race between Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon. Dixon has won 4 races to Helio's 1, but Helio has been more consistent throughout the year and has an 8-point lead going into today's race 2, which is the penultimate race of the season.
Justin Wilson is 6th in the standings with 4 podium finishes but hasn't managed to win a race, while Dario Franchitti is 7th. Mike Conway managed to win a race in Detroit earlier in the season but is well down in the standings as he doesn't race on ovals anymore.
Race winners: r = road course, s = street, o = oval St. Petersburg (s) - James Hinchcliffe Barber (r) - Ryan Hunter-Reay Long Beach (s) - Takuma Sato Sao Paulo (s) - James Hinchcliffe Indianapolis 500 (o) - Tony Kanaan Detroit 1 (s) - Mike Conway Detroit 2 (s) - Simon Pagenaud Texas (o) - Helio Castroneves Milwaukee (o) - Ryan Hunter-Reay Iowa (o) - James Hinchcliffe Pocono (o) - Scott Dixon Toronto 1 (s) - Scott Dixon Toronto 2 (s) - Scott Dixon Mid-Ohio (r) - Charlie Kimball Sonoma (r) - Will Power Baltimore (s) - Simon Pagenaud Houston 1 (s) - Scott Dixon Houston 2 (s) - Fontana (o) -
Hinchcliffe, Sato, Pagenaud and Kimball were all first-time winners.
Other British drivers who've appeared this year are James Jakes, who finished 2nd in race 2 in Detroit, Pippa Mann, Katherine Legge and Justin Wilson's younger brother Stefan, who made his debut in Baltimore. Both Wilson brothers were driving for Dale Coyne Racing, making them the first brothers to drive for the same team since Gary and Tony Bettenhausen 30 years ago.

Dario Franchitti suffered a fractured spine and broken ankle after a major crash in Houston last night. Takuma Sato lost control of his car and sent Dario into the wall and catch fencing in a crash that had several similarities to the one that killed Dan Wheldon two years ago.
13 spectators were injured by flying debris, though none seriously.

Injury-wise, he should be OK I think. The biggest question mark would be whether he wants to come back at his age, following a huge crash like that. I know he and Ashley Judd separated earlier this year and maybe this crash will lead to him focusing on other things.
