What an exciting 3 hours of cricket. The Aussies never give up, and the last pair played superbly (again). Their fans are terrific too.
Must say I thought we'd wrapped it up when Siddle went with the Aussies still needing 80. But Haddin and Pattinson knuckled down, and 17,000 people were on the edge of their seats by lunchtime.
Test Cricket. Just brilliant. Who needs T20 or 50 over ODIs ?

Only concern is England's much vaunted bowling "unit". It consisted of Anderson as chief wicket taker and Swann as pressure builder in this match, with very little from anyone else. Onions to replace Finn at Lord's ?

Session-by-session: (some of these are really tough to call so a lot of consideration has been given to momentum and overall match position) DAY 1
Evening: Eng 30-4(ao), Aus 75-4 ( England's session) DAY 2Morning: Aus 154-5 ( Australia's session) Ah, good, you're still doing the session-ometer. I was wondering about that when listening to/watching the first few days. The two sessions above in particular seemed like "sessions of two halves" - the first half obviously going one way, and the second half being a complete reversal. Giving each session to the side that finished stronger seems fair, given the momentum of the match. Does your rubric allow for drawn sessions? Unfortunately, I'll be missing the weekend action of the next two tests: next week, I'm going to a wedding, and the weekend of the third test clashes with a stag do! (No, nothing to do with Mansfield, unless it gets reallly crazy...) If it's absolutely impossible to split them, I might call a session as drawn, though I think I've only done this before when rain has intervened. You could certainly make a case for at least 3 sessions in this test. With the final session of day 1, I felt England taking 4 wickets at the top of Australia's innings was more important than the Aussies dismissing the England tail cheaply. For the first session on day 2, England put themselves in a great position with those 5 quick wickets but most of that work was undone with the final wicket partnership. Australia went from trailing by about 80 (when Agar should've been out the first time) to having a first innings lead of 65. With that shift in the balance of play, I had to give the session to Australia, even though England might've settled for them being all out for 280 at the start of the day.

Only concern is England's much vaunted bowling "unit". It consisted of Anderson as chief wicket taker and Swann as pressure builder in this match, with very little from anyone else. Onions to replace Finn at Lord's ? Apart from Finn, I'm not too concerned yet. Broad missed most of the 1st innings with a shoulder injury and did a decent job in the 2nd innings on a pitch that didn't offer much to the bowlers. Anderson is the exception as he's clearly one of the top 3 bowlers in the world right now and has almost taken on Flintoff-like status with the England fans. England like to show loyalty to their players, especially after a victory so I wouldn't be surprised to see Finn play at Lord's, but if it were up to me, I'd drop him and bring in either Bresnan or Onions. I'm more concerned with England's batting. They improved in the 2nd innings, but the reality is if England bat as well as they're capable of doing, the series shouldn't even be close.

It was slightly harsh that Compton was dropped to make way for Pietersen, but there's no way I'd ditch Bairstow now. His first innings was solid, and his partnership of 43 with Bell in the second laid the foundations for the match winning knock.

Steven Finn reminds me of Steve harmison explosive and unplayable at times but can also be a liability.Devon Malcolm fell into that bracket as well.

2nd test underway at Lord's. Bresnan replaces Finn in the England line-up. Australia make two changes with Khawaja and Harris coming in for Cowan and Starc.
England won the toss and are batting.

Is Starc injured as I thought he did okay for them? Cook really is struggling isn't he? At least we are batting, because in this heat, I think that is the right thing to do, assume we won the toss?

When you lose three early wickets on day 1, I think you have to dig in and grind the runs out, else the test match could get away from you. Shame Trott couldn't do more than get a 50! Bell & Bairstow ticking along nicely though.

Bairstow was slightly lucky earlier when he was clean bowled off a no ball by Siddle.
England actually scoring at a decent rate. Just over 3.5 an over. They put on over 100 in the afternoon session.
